Does a 40 chest in a man equate to S, M or L do you think???

Have seen a fantastic ski jacket on ebay for DH, want to surprise him, so don't want to ask him chest size and I truly have absolutely idea what it is. He is 6'2" and quite nicely put together (!) ie. not a rake, not a lardy either. I've done a quick rummage, but his upper half clothes seem to be either done on neck size (shirts) or sized "large" for jumpers etc...

Any help gratefully received. TIA

Find a jacket you know fits him well and measure the chest.

SmileItsSunny · 12/01/2012 18:24

Definitely not small! Medium to large I would say. DH had 44 inch chest and always L to XL.

AmberNectarine · 12/01/2012 18:24

My relatively slight DH is a 38 (5'8 and c. 11st) and generally wears a medium. So 40 probably a L. Does he have any suit jackets you could check out, they would have a measurement?

2tired2bewitty · 12/01/2012 18:27

Almost certainly a large. Dh has a 44" chest and never wears anything smaller than xl. Second looking in suit jackets

QuietOhSoQuiet · 12/01/2012 18:34

my dh is the same as yours in build but an inch taller,he has to wear a 44 to get the length in body/arms right

AnonymousBird · 12/01/2012 18:38

He has his suit on ATM, his other main jacket I know fits well just says large. Will try and look at the suit later, as ski jacket comes up for bidding tomorrow!

Thanks for inPut, sounds like may be on right track....

What brand is the jacket? You can probably look it up.

AnonymousBird · 12/01/2012 18:45

Ninja- good idea - need to check their website.

DH is 41 and is medium to large depending on the brands.

doughnutty · 12/01/2012 19:04

M&S 40 is a medium.

TrinityRhino · 12/01/2012 19:06

dp says a large Smile

JustAnother · 12/01/2012 20:04

Dh is 5'9, 11st and his chest is 38''. He normally buys medium.

cruelladepoppins · 12/01/2012 20:10

DH is a 40 chest - 6ft, so quite tall and slim, though he's an outdoors man and muscular around the shoulders - he usually gets a Large so there's enough length in the body and sleeves. Depends on the style and the brand, though.

Haberdashery · 12/01/2012 21:53

I would say Large, especially as he may want to wear a few layers under the jacket. DH is about a 36 inch chest and takes a Small or sometimes Medium if it's something where he wants a baggier fit.

southeastastra · 12/01/2012 21:53

large

wellwisher · 13/01/2012 13:14

What brand is it? Maybe the brand's website has a size guide?

Don't forget you need a bit of extra room across the back in a ski jacket, as you need to keep your arms in front of you.

AnonymousBird · 14/01/2012 14:19

It was too small, in the end I had to ask him, he said "42 at least" and considering you need layers under a ski jacket it would have been tight.

Anyway, as luck would have it, his brother who is the same size has a ski jacket (which is odd, as he has never been skiing and has no plans to!!!)

So problem solved, but thanks for the input.

I can answer this as I'm a man with a chest of exactly 40 inches!
If he's generally on the slim side, medium will be the best bet.
If he's unusally tall, over 6'1" say, or on the fat side (or both), then large would be better.

LittleGnu · 14/01/2012 14:25

Sorry, just read the OP properly. On account of his height I would get large. Medium would fit his chest better, but will be too short (generally speaking).

KatAndKit · 14/01/2012 14:29

L . My DP buys large and often XL due to his height. Often the stuff he gets in XL is quite loose on him. The ski jacket in a 40 ought to be fine if he wears L in jumpers.
