So what's with these knitted patterned leggings?

That look like thick tights, so that the wearer looks like she forgot to put her skirt on?

I am old and terribly unfashionable.

They are vile. They make even shell suits appear sexy in comparison. In Birmingham, they are mostly being worn by 'sturdy' looking young girls with short jumpers and Paul's Boutique coats. It is NOT a good look.

belgo · 09/01/2012 17:35

I saw loads of women wearing these in Bristol last week. They didn't look good on anyone.

Iscreamtea · 09/01/2012 17:36

I'm glad it's not just me thinks they look like they forgot their skirt!

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 09/01/2012 17:36

Everytimes I spot them I think 'wtf?' and find it very hard not to stare Grin

Deeply odd.

Sidge · 09/01/2012 17:50

Glad it's not just me then!

Even the slim willowy teens at the local 6th form college look daft in them, as if they're half dressed.

You can still pick up some Isabel Marant ones in the NAP sale.

I hate it when people look like they forgot to put a skirt on!

TuttoRhino · 09/01/2012 18:00

Hah. My mother visiting from Canada was commenting yesterday about how hideous these look and how everybody seems to be wearing them. And how most people wearing them without a tunic top or longer really, really shouldn't (she is not slim herself).

mycatsaysach · 09/01/2012 18:02

ugh i thought it was the bottom half of a onesie when i saw someone wearing these

dexter73 · 09/01/2012 19:18

My dd and lots of her friends wear them. It makes my eyes bleed when there are 4-5 of them together all clashing!

ChickensGoMeh · 09/01/2012 19:20

I'd wear them to bed. They look cosy.

PollyMorfic · 09/01/2012 19:25

My tall, slim and gorgeous 16yo and all her friends are asking the same Q as the OP, so it's not just fogies wondering this.

They are hijjus.

jasperJohns · 09/01/2012 19:29

My gorgeous 14 yr old gdaughter wears them and manages to look OK.

They are foul though.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/01/2012 19:40

Yep - my 16 and 14 year old dds are also wondering why on earth anybody would wear them.

I can imagine that on somebody v tiny, worn with a skater skirt and boots, they could look just about okay - but otherwise, they are really nasty. I do wonder if some of the girls actually look in the mirror before leaving the house tbh.

yellowraincoat · 09/01/2012 19:42

Oh I think they're lovely! One of my students wears them and looks lovely.

KandyBarr · 09/01/2012 19:43

Awful. Acrylic, too - they'll all end up with yeast infections :(

CointreauVersial · 09/01/2012 21:07

Vile. Even the slimmest teenager looks like a moose in them.

OhThisIsJustGrape · 09/01/2012 21:48

Lol, I saw two college students wearing them today. They were exactly the same pattern (deliberate? Or did they both die of shame when they turned up at college this morning and realised they were wearing the same clothes as each other? Hmm)

Unfortunately, one girl was at least 3 sizes bigger than the other and given that they were both wearing them with short jackets they difference between them was very apparent. I felt sorry for the larger of the two... Almost Grin

Hulababy · 09/01/2012 21:50

Noone of any age or size should wear leggings without a long top, dress or skirt over them! No one, imo, looks good if they are wearing leggings on their own.

PollyMorfic · 09/01/2012 21:58

Hula - if they're young enough to still be in nappies I'm prepared to let it go. Otherwise - notsomuch.

Scorps · 09/01/2012 22:02

Oh I love mine

Infact I shall wear them tomorrow now Grin

Sonotwonderwoman · 09/01/2012 22:07

My MIL bought me some for Christmas! I don't think she likes me I have tried them on for amusement factor. I am not very tiny, nor very young, but it did give us a good laugh.

A group of friends of mine in RL (hope they aren't reading this!) meet up to exchange the naffest presents we all recieve at Christmas.... these are my offering!

AgeingFop · 10/01/2012 09:27

This is a hard look to carry off, I think. Did see a woman wearing them the other day with a (probably too short for tights alone) black flared-out tunic/dress and she looked pretty good.

OTPH, I also saw a lady wearing a pair with some boots with a knitted top in a similar but clashing pattern and a chunky knitted jumper. Looked absolutely awful. If any of you have read the book "The Non Stop Knotty Knitter" to your DCs you'll get the picture.

southeastastra · 10/01/2012 10:05

i dunno i quite like the wacky look myself, wouldn't wear them Grin

i also like the metallic jeans and disco pants though Grin

BranchingOut · 10/01/2012 11:14

The last time I was in Birmingham I was struck with horror by a rather large girl wearing cheap beige leggings and a short top. It was almost worse than seeing somebody nude.

I think these might be a reasonable alternative. Surely if you are wearing something tight around your crotch then a gay distracting pattern in a thick knit is precisely what is needed?
