Hi I've had a plit in my nail for 3 years now. I keep having to file the nail down and I can't let it grow. does anybody know anything I can buy that I can paint on rather than having to go for a manicure (I hate those places). I've tried nail hardener and it just doesn't work.

I've done this as well and never found anything to help. Doesn't matter what i do it gets to a a certain length and then splits again. I used to have such nice nails as well

Watching for any good suggestions

A split that has been there for 3 years is permanent I'm afraid. The best thing to do is see a Nail Tech who can protect it with an acrylic or gel overlay - that will enable the nail to grow without splitting.

Hth's

horses that was exactly what I was about to suggest. I have done this with nasty splits before. OP the acrylic looks OK, you don't have to paint it. And one nail will only cost a couple of pounds.

HorsesDogsNails · 06/01/2012 23:25

Bonzo I'm a fulll-time Nail Tech and have 2 clients that I do this for using acrylic.....

Sad not what I wanted to hear but ok I guess I'll have to book an appointment then. Thank you to you both Xx

Have you tried Nailtiques? I tried everything, and always had these splitting in a painful way nails. Nothing helped AT ALL (not even Nial Envy which was pointless). This stuff is the business. One week of it and nails are much stronger and not splitting. I use no. 2 and got it on amazon. Not cheap, but worth it for me (I loathe nail places too). Good luck.

They are often psioritic. Do you have psoriasis?

Its not much help really, as I don't think nails can be treated easily, though I guess you can be glad you don't have the psioritic arthiritis that 1 in 3 get (if you do have psoriasis)! My dad is on bloody chemo for this believe it or not so it doesn't shag his load bearing joints. Doom and gloom, sorry, I have the "nails" but if I don't get the arthiritis I'll be glad. Sorry, that's all rather negative!!! You may not even have psoriasis.

topsyturner · 08/01/2012 19:24

Tatty my recent 6 months of chemo (for breast cancer) was the only thing that cleared my psoarisis . Bloody miracle it was . Mind you , I don't advocate getting cancer as a cure for skin ailments Grin

Horses as mentioned above I have had chemo for 6 months , and my nails are shot . They are splitting badly , and quite far down the nail too .
Would acrylics or gels be an option for me ?

Sorry for the thread hijack .

RedBlanket · 08/01/2012 19:44

Sorry for the hijack

Mine arent flaky split. I broke oinept mine putting the DCs pram into the car a few years ago, a piece of metal split it from the top down. I think I've damaged the nail bed as it has never grown out.
I'll look at nailtiques, but nor sure it would work for me as it's in pretty good condition. I just can't grow it without it splitting.

RedBlanket · 08/01/2012 19:45

Oinept = one of

Try it redblanket: I had a similar issue with a toe nail that came off completely 2 years ago Shock. It never grew back properly (grew back a bit, came off again over and over). This actually seems to be working so far, even on that.
(I do not work for the company, promise)

FlightRisk · 09/01/2012 10:29

No it split on the potatoe slicer so not peeling but a split down the middle of it. no I don't have psoriasis.

Redblanket how yours is sounds how mine is.

Jenny - thanks I'll have a look for some. I've aslo has a toenail come off completely as well, but that seems to be growing back ok so far.

I think that lack of b vitamins can cause nail splitting. You need to take all the b vitamins together but ask your doctor. I would not advise a gel on the nail as when it grows back it is very weak and could split again.
