for and against a skinhead.........

I have pretty short hair right now, and I HATE it. It takes so much more effort to style every morning than when I had hair halfway down my back. I loved it at first, but now I just don't have time for it, and just wear a hat all day, even when I go out to dinner. I am seriously considering just shaving my head. I know that I will have to deal with the same issues with letting it grow back eventually. But, I am a MOTHER So, for or against? (I guess I can predict what the majority of you will say!) But where is the line between beautiful and bald headed freak?!

I have had pretty much a shaven head for years. I vary between about 1/4" and a few inches, then get annoyed and cut it all off again.

I love having really short hair. It suits me (I think). It is no work, it takes no styling, it's too short for kids to pull, it never looks messy or dirty. It's just perfect.

I would say, don't go all the way, don't cut it entirely off, get it buzzed off, down to say 1/2". Or maybe 1". I think entirely bald would maybe make you look a bit poorly (chemo) or strange. It would grow back again quickly enough, but still.

MrsSpoon · 14/01/2006 21:05

I would say against. If I were in your shoes I would be trying to grow it and either wearing hats as you do or trying some sort of band thing while it grows down.

Gingerbear · 14/01/2006 21:06

Marsy has vvvv short hair and is a BABE!

MrsSpoon · 14/01/2006 21:06

Ah see I was thinking totally bald. If you had the right sort of features then very short crop could look fantastic.

Gingerbear · 14/01/2006 21:08

However, if you worked in the warehouse where DH works, all the women with shaven heads tend to wear lots of gold earrings, piercings and doc martin boots.

Mercy · 14/01/2006 21:13

Your hair may well grow back thicker if you shave your head, would that be a prob?. Do you have the right shaped face for it?

What's your hair like?

NQC, I'm very envious of women who can have really short hair, I looked like a toilet brush when mine started to grow back.

Gingerbear · 14/01/2006 21:16

Like Zoe Wanamaker, Mercy?

Mercy · 14/01/2006 21:21

Worse I'm afraid! My hair is very thick and quite coarse, so very short was fine, growing it out was horrendous. But I did it

littlelamb · 14/01/2006 21:26

My hair is quite thick already. It is about three or four inches all over right now, and it does suit my face to have it this short. I have good cheekbones and eyes. I just don't want to be the scariest mum at nursery! Do you think youth is a good excuse? I am 22, but have no wierd piercings and actually dress quite conservatively!

Spidermama · 14/01/2006 21:28

It'll keep nits at bay.

Mercy · 14/01/2006 21:33

Youth is an excuse for anything stylewise. Plus all 22 year olds are gorgeous - specially if you've got good cheekbones

Go for it - you can always grwo it back, it's only hair after all!

NotQuiteCockney · 14/01/2006 21:35

Growing hair back always sucks.

That being said, I don't much care about appearance, but managed to get mine to short-bob length for a wedding a few years back.

Tortington · 14/01/2006 21:50

fuck it do what you want - what everyone else thinks is bollocks

Cabe · 14/01/2006 22:14

Go for it Little Lamb - It may be a pain when it's mid-stage and growing back but a shaven head can look really good on a girl... You're only in your early 20s I think so you can probably pull this off
(saw your name on an earlier thread about Fern Brittain)

FrannytheQuinoaEater · 14/01/2006 22:22

Ooh yes do it. I used to have a skinhead and it was wonderful - free from the tyranny of bad hair days! Plus complete strangers come up and stroke it

The only thing I would recommend is maybe having a short crop at the hairdressers first, which will be softer round your face and look less severe. It will still be p*ss easy to look after but you won't get so many 'dyke' comments and can evaluate whether you really suit extremely short hair. After that it's up to you if you go the full hog. If you have cheekbones and eyes worth mentioning, as you say, I would definitely say DO IT.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/01/2006 22:24

If you plan to do it more than once, buy a set of clippers. They cost something like £20, you can get them at Argos, and they will work for ages.

The thing is, I found hairdressers always missed a spot or two, anyway. You'll miss a spot or too, too, but you can fix it the next day.

Furball · 14/01/2006 22:26

what about this or a bit longer or a bit messier or Like This

littlelamb · 14/01/2006 22:35

That last one is pretty much what I already have, except my hair is brown. I am going to seriously think about it tonight, have a word with the old boyfriend, and make a firm decision tomorrow. If I do it, I will need his help to hold the bic!

Wow, love all the haircuts on Furball's link. Very of anyone who suits their hair like that.
