Barbour jackets - worth the money?

As the title says really. Have fancied a wax one for a while...they remind me of my grandad. They seem to have gotten a bit fashion now.

Is a Barbour jacket a worthy investment?

I wouldn't buy one as a fashion item but they last really well. I have one that's about 20 years old so you have to say it's given great service - not something I'd wear out with friends though! You can buy reproofer in outdoor shops and send them back to Barbour for repair if needed.

Are they warm? Do you need to wear another layer underneath?

I'm out with the dog a lot in the hills/forest so no fear of wearing out on the town!

i've got a Beadnell (think thats how you spell it!) and its great. You can buy reproofer in the shop like fortyplus says, or if you send it to Barbour, theyll do it for you which I have done before. They are windproof which is great. I tend to wear and long sleeved jumper under mine, over a tshirt, and thats warm enough. Mine is also bum covering! so no draughts around the tops of my jeans etc!
and I wear mine out with everything. dogs, reservoir, popping into town, to the pub.
the sale starts online tomorrow.....

My DH bought me a lovely barbour jacket for Christmas (but not a wax one) It's really warm and cosy and looks lovely. I never buy myself "expensive" things, but I love it, and know I will wear it everyday Smile

A waxed barbour will last decades, although the brand seems to be getting very popular atm.

MrsSeanBean · 01/01/2012 23:03

Yes I have one that's 25 years old. You can send them back for patching if they get too tatty.

DH is wearing his fathers old one - it is a Northumberland and 30 years old! has been rewaxed - DH just buys a tin and does it himself. The only thing /i would say is it is very heavy. He has the extra wool lining but hardly ever puts it in unless it is really cold.
