dodgy haircut - chop it off or grow it out?

I've been given one of those bobs where the back is really short and the front is long. My hair's wavy and I hate it. . The front didn't look part of the same haircut IYSWIM, so I've chopped those bits shorter but now I look like I have a teacosy for hair.

What to do - chop it to a crop (that's what I was growing out) or grow it out. Would pin back the sides but it looks weird as the back is so short. Sad

I have a nice fringe, are there any nice dos where the fringe is full but the rest is short?

well, it all depends. If you want long hair, or longish, you need to grow it out. If you cut it all off then you are back to square one. If you hadn't tried to sort it yourself you definitely could have gone back to the hair dressers and got them to try to make it more to your liking. You could still try that, but you might be better leaving it for a couple of weeks to grow then going back. A new hair cut is always scary, many is the time I have had to resist the urge for some home correction the minute I left the salon!

I also have wavy hair, and grew out a crop to about shoulder length. And have now had it cut back off to a graduated bob (just like yours), but with a growing out fringe. I find it easier to get it looking nice than much longer, but prettier than a crop. I just dry it quickly upside down then straighten the top. Your original hair cut sounded great. You might find that if you use straighteners that you can make it look fab.

When you say 'original', do you mean the one the hairdresser gave me?

How long are the shortest layers in your bob? I love bobs as a rule, but this was more like a short haircut with a long front, IYSWIM. At my neck it was done with clippers, and the longest bit on the back of my head is about 3.5 inches. I think that's why I really disliked it, the bits by my ears looked like they were from a different hairstyle.

i would go to a different hair dresser if i were you and see if they can sort it out.

i have had my share of bad hair cuts, i think you have 3 choices

leave it and grow it
go back to see a different hairdreser
cut it all short

i just realised the other day that despite me trying to grow a bob out that my hairdresser keeps insisting on trimming the sides around my face so the sides are shorter than the back = mumsy extremis!!

she is a good hairdresser at the Mark Hill salon, hair always looks good and easy to do myself but i am going to HAVE to say something when i go back in Feb....cant be doing with mumsy at age of 39....

misshonker by original I meant the haircut you're not happy with. Now you describe it, it does sound a bit short, I can understand why you're not happy. The front of mine very nearly touches under my chin if I pull it, the longest bits at the back are about 5.5 inches and then there is about 1.5 inches of graduation. No clippers used. I have had your haircut in the past, on the journey from buzz cut to shoulder length, it did grow out quite fast. I'd get to a new hairdresser and explain how you would like it to look and she will help you hopefully by only trimming the bits that are too long for the rest of the cut. Hopefully your hair will grow at a convenient 1-2cm a month, so by the end of March, at the latest, the back will be a better length, and with 2 well - judged trims of the front in that time you'll be happier in no time. Seems a shame to cut it all off, that will take even longer to grow out!

Thank you ladies. Yes, it's too extreme, like a short cut for people who aren't brave enough, IYSWIM.

Mumsy personified now, as I have teacosied myself. Arse.

Perhaps I could aim for Keira Knightley's wavy bob. Wavy hair is tricky to pull off when your face is fat and you're over 40. Boo.
