Going red (like the Desperate housewives woman) - thoughts??

I'm naturally dark dishwatery blonde with fair hair and blue eyes and currently have highlights to be very fair blonde, but feeling like I need a change and wondering about going red... Any thoughts? Can a blonde skin tone take a very red hair? Will it go the right colour or come out all pinky???

Confused

That is very very close to my natural colour- all I can say is good luck if you are dyeing it at home, I have been unable to find a home dye that colour (although am about to order the excellent combo recommended by TattyDevine)- I need to cover my greys. all the home dyes are 'aubergine' or 'auburn'.

Are you getting it done at a salon?

Oh no I wouldn't do it myself - I am rubbish at anything practical/fiddly. I have a hairdresser who comes to me at home and he normally does my highlights, so I have texted him to ask what he thinks about going red....

I really fancy a very red red red - something distinctive and noticeable, not subtle or natural (altho not Katy Perry...). There are some fab shades on here - www.squidoo.com/perfect-red-hair - I particularly like this one: reddishness.tumblr.com/post/7849534102

Are you tanned op, if so, how much?

Red hair goes best with cooler light skin tones.

If you have a pinkish tone to your complexion or rosacea, I would personally avoid red hair as this will bring it out more.

If not go for it, it does fade very quickly though.

Nope, not remotely tanned! Although I do have pink undertones to my fair skin - not rosacea or anything, skin is okay now (have suffered with acne in the past but have beaten it into submission with endless very strong drugs, so skin is just pale now).

I would worry about the maintenance, although I get my highlights done every 6 weeks and red dye would be cheaper so I could possibly get it done every 4 weeks and it would still be cheaper than highlights...
