How do I know if I will suit short hair? Are there rules?

I have shoulder length thick, dark slighty wavy hair and keep fantasising about a pixie style cut...I'm 39 though and afraid I'll look like a plain middle aged woman who thinks she's too old for long hair!

I'm large of eye with quite good skin and dont look 39 so they tell me...I have had a bob a few years back and it did suit...I always wear my hair up though and someone once told me years ago that if you've got on hair but always put it up, you need it all chopped. What do I do?? Go for it?

If you suit your hair tied up off your face you'll suit short hair. Go for it. I've had very short hair and long hair. I prefer short on me rather than a bob. Although mine pretty long at the mo, I do hanker after a short very blonde crop.

ThatVikRinA22 · 20/12/2011 23:21

depends on your face shape.

i wear mine up alot, but i sort of have it piled up high, or twisted up with a bit of "fluff"....

it suits me up, but not short because i have quite a round ish face.

a bob suits me but id never go shorter than chin length.

i think, if i lost about 3 stone i could carry off a pixie cut, as i am small boned, small framed, but as it stands, for me, personally, its a no no

but if you have elfin features im sure it can look wonderful.

BandOMothers · 20/12/2011 23:32

Me too Vicar...I have a lot of volume when it's up...I am small boned...and my features could be elfin...(aged elf) but I worry that I have a short forehead...gah.

I need a GOOD one of those sites where you try hair on..I have looked but they all want my details written in blood and I don't want an inbox full of crap. Fanny I have also always wanted a short blonde crop! I thought I would hack first....

I love short hair, but can't do it at this weight because I think you need a jawline as opposed to jowls. Hmm

You've got to wear make-up at our age otherwise you can just look frumpy and dowdy.

fannybanjo · 21/12/2011 08:11

Oh yes agree you probably need small features. I've a very small face - in fact I would say it is the same size as this -----> Smile

SantasENormaSnob · 21/12/2011 10:02

My mum looks amazing with very short hair.

She isn't pixie like at all though.

Bom, I used one of those sites and didn't sign up for anything. Think it may have been uk hairdressers. Can't do links sorry Xmas Blush

moragbellingham · 21/12/2011 19:23

Large of eye sounds about right.

I always think you need to make an extra effort with your make-up.

shoddyandolder · 21/12/2011 19:27

Small defined features and big eyes and clear skin. Any thickness around the neck looks awful so i think slim is a must sadly. I love short hair on the right face I could never have it but it looks great and is stylish

Cybbo · 21/12/2011 19:46

My face is SQUAre adn I ned a bit of hair showing at my neck, when viewed form the front IYSWIM to soften the corners of my face!

If my hair was like yours though I woudl ahve it like this

plus face transplant

Cybbo · 21/12/2011 19:47

Some women seem to think the older they get or the fatter the shorter their hair shoudl go. DO't MAKE THIS MISTAKE people

shoddyandolder · 21/12/2011 19:51

I agree cybbo you need to be pretty perfect for an elfin crop hair is a great softener and the movement is youthful.I live in fear of that Pat Butcher look

Jessicaalbastwin · 21/12/2011 19:58

cybbo I had that hairstyle a few years ago, and for some reason I just couldn't get used to it, I missed My long hair so much, I was not happy till My hair grew back. I am a coward when it comes to short hair, eventhough My husband loves it short, I love it long. My face shape is oval.

Cybbo · 21/12/2011 19:59

My driving licence has me sporting a Pat Butcher. But I actually look more like Rose West. thank god its about to expire

Jessicaalbastwin · 21/12/2011 20:04

cybbo Xmas Grin

BandOMothers · 22/12/2011 00:16

Cybbo that link is lovely but my hair would never STAY artfully arranged like that...I am slim and have good skin...long neck etc...not girraffe-like but you know...not encircled with plumpness...I have however lost the desire for a pixie...but I always get tired of it as it is...maybe I should change to blonde...that would satisfy my restless follicles.

Go short, you can always jazz it up/funk it up with styling products so even if you wake up like Pat Butcher, you'll soon be transformed into something else with a bit of product here and there! My husband loves my short hair and I've had very long hair for years and years. I feel younger and trendier with short hair and it has changed my style and confidence too. Go for it!

BandOMothers · 22/12/2011 21:10

I am really tempted by CYbbos link...it's gorgeous and the hair is exactly the same texture as mine...but I thnk I will ask for it shorter...
