What can I wear on Xmas day that will be warm as well as a bit dressy?

I don't possess any dressy winter clothes really, all my going out stuff is short sleeved or sleeveless or thin floaty material. Fine for in a hot crowded bar or something but not in a normal house where the central heating is pleasantly warm. The last couple of xmases I've been shivering in short sleeved dresses till I've had a tipple or ten to warm my blood! Don't really want to have to resort to a glittery cardi or novelty woolly Christmas jumper!

What are you all wearing?

We're staying at home (just the four of us) so I won't be dressing up but I will probably put on a jersey dress with a thin jumper layered layered under it, opaques and boot slippers.

I'd really like to wear a jumper dress but I can't find one I like enough to buy it and refuse to wear an acrylic one!

tethersjinglebellend · 17/12/2011 19:01

There is a real dearth of nice jumper dresses this year. I bought this one, but that model must be about 4' tall as on me (5'6") it's a good 3" above the knee.

Have you looked at Jaeger, Remus?

NicolaWorkHardPartyHarder · 17/12/2011 19:04

I wear jumper dresses as well-La Redoute do some nice ones.Cosy, trendy and very flattering. Getting a vertically-striped dress will make you look taller and slimmer, a look i'd always like to go for after a few too many mince pies!xxx

CointreauVersial · 17/12/2011 19:22

I will probably wear a jumper dress (M&S Autograph had some good ones), or maybe this top which I bought recently, with slim black trousers. It's knitted, so quite cosy, but hopefully doesn't qualify as a novelty jumper!

tethersjinglebellend · 17/12/2011 20:20

No, no, Nicola- the opposite is true; the vertical stripe myth was disproved. Horizontal stripes actually make you look slimmer. I had always suspected it, ever since reading it in Jackie- now science agrees with me Grin

Can't afford Jaegar and too long for me anyway, I'm afraid. I thought I'd find one in M&S Autograph but didn't see any when I looked last week.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/12/2011 20:22

I've got a horizontal striped jersey Autograph dress and think it's pretty flattering tbh.

Tinselrella · 17/12/2011 20:23

I will probably be wearing this dress from Hobbs . It is lovely and warm and looks incredible on (I say modestly [fwink)

tethersjinglebellend · 17/12/2011 20:26

Honestly, I should be on a bloody Jaeger commission- Keep an eye on the prices, they usually get marked down. This for example.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/12/2011 21:26

Not so fond of that, Tethers - too dressy. I really want a snuggly, more 'jumper-ish' one. And the bits down the side look like barbed wire! :)

FairToMiddlin · 17/12/2011 21:34

I got this dress from Peacocks. It's much nicer than it looks online. Its fully lined and just skims the body. Very warm & comfortable with opaques and boots.

FuriousRox · 17/12/2011 21:41

What I do is start with a "ninja" outfit: black leggings and black long sleeved top. Then put any dress on top, even if it's a summery one. And a long cardigan over the top until I drink enough booze to kick start my personal central heating system. Ta-daa [twirls.. falls over, probably]

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/12/2011 21:42

Pmsl at ninja outfit :)

onefatcat · 17/12/2011 21:45

It's a complete myth that vetical stripes ae slimming- horizontal ones look best on dresses.

theseventhdwarf · 17/12/2011 21:55

this
i saw this today and would have bought it but budget doesnt allow ... it looked very lovely!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/12/2011 22:52

Love that Warehouse one - will investigate. How tall are you please and how short was it on you?

iWILLdothis · 18/12/2011 07:54

Love that jaeger one! V tempted...

theseventhdwarf · 18/12/2011 08:11

i didnt have time ti try it one sorry, i m tall - reckon it would have been well above my knee, dont know if you can see in the pic but there s nice buttons at the side of the hem and the hem s slightly curved.
be lovely with tights and ankle boots imo

KandyBarr · 18/12/2011 09:59

Aubin &Wills dress has Breton-y horizontal stripes, but requires good legs (which counts me out). I like the blue and white version

here

trixymalixy · 18/12/2011 10:02

Furiousrox, I do as you do, I never had a name for it before though!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/12/2011 13:12

Thanks Dwarf - I am NOT tall but it would need to be above knee length or would be frumpy on me. Will go and check it out.

Love the colours of that A&W one but wonder if it's a bit shapeless? I'm an hour glass and need the waist to nip in a bit.

castlesintheair · 18/12/2011 17:32

They had some really nice tunics and wooly jumper dresses in Kew159 when I popped in this week. They have a 50% sale on.
