good luck. remember, start small.

nethunsreject · 16/12/2011 12:10

I did it a few weeks back and it is great. Agree with aitch that you need to take it slowwly the first time - it's easy to hack too much off otherwise.

wahwahwah · 16/12/2011 12:11

Oh dear. My friend is a hairdresser and she says that it never works out well!

Would love to know if this works! I'm self dying my hair tonight so a self cut too will be a brave addition :-D

Dillydollydaydream · 16/12/2011 18:34

I've thought about attempting this but too chicken! I'm worried how to explain myself at the hair dressers when it goes wrong!

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 16/12/2011 18:35

I've had this haircut for nearly 3 years and have only had one disaster. Definitely start small, watch where you put the ponytail or you'll Cadfael yourself. :o

esperance · 16/12/2011 19:01

Helen Mirren supposedly cuts her own hair:

?For the last 20 to 30 years, I?ve only ever been to the hairdressers if I?ve had to go for a part I?ve been playing,? she told the paper. ?I simply put my hair in a ponytail and cut across the top ? it creates natural layers and just falls right. I colour it myself too.?

Oh my. Don't do what I did when pissed a hundred years ago at University.
I cut my fringe. While it was damp. By holding it down tightly and then cutting it with nail scissors. Very Henry V. Or, unfortunately, probably very <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=Blackadder+1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=j8d&sa=X&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&biw=1440&bih=785&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=8cBw7Y1gT0VCCM:&imgrefurl=tainted-archive.blogspot.com/2009/11/blackadder-first.html&docid=vavt8OYVkDUneM&imgurl=4.bp.blogspot.com/_Cb4mdL5MI2A/SwZg7RG6SzI/AAAAAAAAEq0/8YWp7Jl1rOM/s1600/blackadder1_m.jpg&w=384&h=414&ei=PZbrTvWcHsqt8gPWqvj1CQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=178&vpy=164&dur=28&hovh=233&hovw=216&tx=108&ty=95&sig=116244180115499935260&page=1&tbnh=131&tbnw=131&start=0&ndsp=32&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Blackadder

I do my own fringe (ALWAY ALWAYS do it while dry, and start over an inch under where you want it to end up, work up SLOWLY), and was linked to the ponytail cut by my DP yesterday (I wonder if he has been MNing? Shock) which I will be doing when my hair gets a little longer!

MeltedAdventCalendarChocolates · 16/12/2011 20:22

wahwah - your friend would say that. She makes money by people not doing it themselves. My DS's old barber told me that parents shouldn't do it themselves, it's harder than it looks... erm, sorry, no mate, it isn't. I do my DS's hair myself now. Piece of cake.

MeltedAdventCalendarChocolates · 16/12/2011 20:25

I also read to do the pony cut when it was wet so you could get it as straight as possible.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 17/12/2011 08:32

definitely don't use nail scissors...

i've cut my own hair loads, and the childrens', it's a piece of piss. haven't done this one, though, i tend just to do fringes. (which i do wet and cut to three quarters of an inch lower than i actually want it).

Dillydollydaydream · 17/12/2011 09:03

I always cut DCs hair. I was a hairdresser 10 years ago though.
I trim my own fringe but have never cut the whole thing. Might give it a go as its Christmas And I'm now too skint to go to the hairdressers!

MyBestBauble · 17/12/2011 13:32

Be very careful.

I tried cutting my own hair a few years ago via this method. I very carefully pulled it all into a pony tail on top of my head. Cut straight across.

Disaster.

So I tried it again, making an even neater pony tail. Even greater disaster.

After that, I had to go to a hairdressers. Wore my hair in a (very short) pony tail for a week, to hide the disaster.

When I finally got to the hairdresser, I tried to explain what had happened, but the hair dresser actually gasped in horror as she brushed my hair out from the pony tail Xmas Blush

wornoutbutstillwonderful · 17/12/2011 21:57

I've done this loads, I find if I straighten my hair first then pull into a ponytail at the very front of my head and comb through with a fine tooth comb it works fine.
I also colour and highlight my hair myself and I always get compliments with people thinking I've just been to the hairdressers.
