Bad hair life. Good hair salons in Derby or Matlock area?

I have recently moved to a Derbyshire village after many years of big city life. It was awful leaving my brilliant hairdresser behind, but is too far to travel back to every few weeks.

Does anyone know of a really good hairdresser in this area, who won't make me look like my mum?

Thank you for any suggestions. I really am desperate, as I am developing a bad hair life!

Manchester or Birmingham Nicky Clarke? I live in a village near Lichfield, local hair dressers are not good.

I live near derby - long eaton area and i know what you mean as i lived in london and went to charles worthington salons before i moved up here.

Sally montague are good - salons in derby, ashbourne, belper and the university.

Thanks Fluffy - both a bit far for me, but perhaps the journey would be worth it.

Crazynell - Have seen Sally Montague salons around. Do you have any particular recommendations re stylists. My hair is in a short crop, and so needs to be cut really well or it looks like coconut matting. And with short hair, you have no way of hiding a bad cut!

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Marywisely. Go for chris at the university salon, he's a good cutter and he has done the vidal sassoon training.

A friend whose hair always looks nice, goes to sarah the creative director at the iron gate branch in derby - go for a consultation and see what they say about doing your hair. x

Thank you so much, Crazynell. Can try both of those. Much appreciated.

It took me a while to find a good hairdresser in Derby - I'd bee spoiled with an amazing one in Newcastle before I moved down here 13 years ago .There's Mark Scott in Derby (couple of salons) and Belper. I've never been overly impressed with Sally Montague although I know a lot of people who rave about them.

I've recently started going to Harvey Luke in Chellaston and V impressed.

MaryWiselyornotatall · 11/12/2011 09:31

Thanks sofa. I know Chellaston, so although a bit of a hike for me, I can have a look at that salon.

Finding a new hairdresser is even harder than finding a good dentist. In fact, I have always thought that finding a new husband would be easier.

Fatima at Cut Above in Matlock is wonderful.

I was regularly driving 20+ miles back to my old hometown til I met her

AgathaCrusty · 11/12/2011 09:53

I would avoid Mark Scott - went there about a year ago and the young female stylist made a complete mess of my hair.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/12/2011 13:09

I tried local salons who charged £50 for a cut, but NC is only £15 more. It's a brilliant cut.

Someone told me stylist tend to go between richard ward or NC in london but I dont know how true it really is.

I aggree that finding a good hairdresser is hard.

MaryWiselyornotatall · 11/12/2011 18:27

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I will have a good look at them, and let you know if I strike gold. Then I will be the one with the lovely, swishy hair - not the one who currently looks a bit like a coconut!

I can recommend Sally Montague too. Hope you find a new hairdresser soon, it's a nightmare when you've been to the same, trusted one for a while!

MaryWiselyornotatall · 11/12/2011 20:17

Thanks super. Any particular stylist / salon? I am open to all suggestions. Desperate, as you can see.

Did you find a good one? I am in your position now and desperate for advice. Please help.

Jellypudmum · 16/11/2013 20:08

There is an amazing salon called I love hair (heart emblem instead of word love) in North Wingfield near Chesterfield. All the staff are Toni and Guy trained and are amazing!! They have a Facebook page too.

Welshandwelsh · 16/11/2013 22:01

Thanks for that tip. I need a haircut and would love a good one. I shall look them up.
