Alternative to a mulberry handbag?

RottenRow · 08/12/2011 12:55

DP has been saying he'll get me a mulberry handbag, I do like the bayswater but not sure I can bring myself to spend £800 on myself. I'm thinking there must be other good quality brands out there that are stylish and long lasting that maybe come in at half the price? Can anyone recommend one, it doesn't have to be for Xmas I could pick something up in the sales.

I've got a few bags from here... all around 200..

Peony & Moore

Loads of other great, not expensive, brands out there, try also Oushka, Modalu, Tabitha Bags, Red Direct, NotOnTheHighStreet.com, TK MAxx, Handpicked Collection online...

Mulberry handbag in the sales? If you are after a seasonal one rather than a classic colour you could save in the region of 30-40% in the xmas sales.

Alternatively there are Mulberry outlets at York, Cheshire Oaks, Bicester and Shepton Mallett selling a mixture of old stock, seconds and things made specially for the outlets with a bit less detail at discounts of 30% plus.

I have Coach handbags. Gorgeous. I think they only have shops in London though (DH has bought mine when working in the US)

natashakaplinkyplop · 08/12/2011 13:12

They have some coach bags on net a porter.

KWL51 · 08/12/2011 13:15

marc jacobs ahve some lovely bags a fair bit cheaper than mulberyr and also orla kiely.
I wasnt a fan of the peopny and moore bags the leather (whilst i accept are at least third cheaper than mulberry) was not of a quality i would expect for a £200 bag.
The modalu bags are nice and there are some lovely fossil ones about too. I can higlhyl recommend the oral kiely ivy bag though very practical without being studenty looking.

Leather on my P&M bags have all been gorgeously squishy, tbh I buy them because the leather is so good. Which one did you get KWL51..? I love Coach bags too and have seen some really nice LK bennet ones, although their latest snakeskin offering on the Anna is a bit thin and horrid...

KWL51 · 08/12/2011 14:15

the one that looks a bit like a mulberry, oaky colour, double handle thats long enough (just) to go over your shoulder with the pocket on the front. im on my phone so cant do links at the moment.

madammecholet · 08/12/2011 14:35

Might be my Lucia KWL51 here I love it though, leather is beautiful, maybe you had a duff one??

Also rottonrow just had an email from RED Direct, 13% off everything today - use Merry1311 at checkout if you find anything :)

mrsrhodgilbert · 08/12/2011 15:05

Russell and Bromley have a bag which is a very close copy of the Bayswater. I have only seen it in a tan colour but they may do others. They don't seem to have a proper website so you would have to get to a shop though. It was £2-300, can't remember exactly.

faustina · 08/12/2011 15:14

there's a really nice one at mimi berry:
www.mimiberry.co.uk/collection/ladies_bags/655_mimi-s-s-11-tote-beau

and then I saw one in plumo today:

www.plumo.com/products/Holt-bag.html

and if you put preview in the media code bit at checkout you will get 25% discount. I think I prefer the mimi berry one though

NanAstley · 08/12/2011 15:53

I have the Lucia too (from Peony & Moore) and the leather is unutterably gorgeous. My in-laws used to be in the leather industry so dh knows a fair bit about leather and he was very taken by the quality of P&M's Lucia.
KWL51 you may have had a duff one perhaps?

Would also recommend Modalu especially their Pippa (have it, love it) and Bibi

KWL51 · 09/12/2011 13:01

maybe, i sold it on ebay after a week and brought the modalu pippa which is fine.
the mimiberry ones are good too, i brought one when someone else on mn linked to them and its a great weekend bag, when you just need to chuck in purse phone and tissues to go and watch the children play football/rugby/ballet etc.

KWL51 · 09/12/2011 13:02

the mimiberry i have is similar to this but bigger.

I live in Italy and Mulberry is not big here. Big tasseled hobo bags still seem quite common but cross-body is possibly on the verge of making a comeback.

Personally, I'd like a Chloe or a Balenciaga, but not a Mulberry.

NoseyNooNoo · 12/12/2011 23:13

Go for the Bayswater! I am not one to spend loads of cash on something like a handbag but I bought one a few months ago and it makes me very happy - ridiculously happy if I'm honest.

alwaysrunninginheels · 13/12/2011 17:15

Yikes i think this runs out tonight or tomorrow BUT mywardrobe has a code for 40% off everything- i bought a mulberry daria last week. Code is SECRETSALE1......suddenly it seemed a bargain....ish!!!!
