How short a skirt can a 37 year old get away with?

Me again. Are there any rules on this? I mean, I know one should be able to wear whatever one wants, but I'm fearful that I'm entering a delusional state whereby I can't recognise that my reflection in the mirror is mutton dressed as lamb ...

... what are you wearing on your feet ???

Is this for your big nite out with lou33 ??

RTKangaSantaMummy · 06/01/2006 12:38

I don't know but my sis is 43 and she wears micro skirts and she looks very silly

but guess that is me being bitchy

ponygirl · 06/01/2006 12:39

Snap, Spacedonkey! I've wondered this! Am also 37. I think it depends on your knees: mine aren't great so I'd probably not go above the knee now. My SIL has always had a fantastic figure and great legs but she said something happened to her knees when she turned 40 so stopped showing them! Will watch this thread with interest!

spacedonkey · 06/01/2006 12:40

lol - yes

I'm wearing knee high lace-up boots with a flat heel (biker stylee) and opaque black tights with a long sleeved black t shirt (not tarty) - so given that the rest of the outfit is reasonably demure, will this balance the shortness of the skirt?

Or will I look like a ridiculous middle aged woman trying to look young?

Or should I just shut up and stop worrying?

(I don't get out much)

my sis has short legs that cannot be described as great or even good

puddle · 06/01/2006 12:41

Depends on:
Your legs
What is on your feet - tights and boots ok, high and strappy no
What is on top - legs and cleavage no.

IMO

spacedonkey · 06/01/2006 12:41

nope, I think my knees are ok

WigWamBam · 06/01/2006 12:41

Depends on whether you're looking for the dignified look or the debauched one, really ...

Crystaltips · 06/01/2006 12:41

Shut up and enjoy your legs and your night out !!!

LOL

spacedonkey · 06/01/2006 12:41

I agree with you puddle - have ensured skirt is the only possibly muttonish part of the outfit

spacedonkey · 06/01/2006 12:42

we're going to a fairly grungey sort of venue populated mainly by studenty types or ageing hippies

RTKangaSantaMummy · 06/01/2006 12:43

or take a photo of your knees and let us pass comment on them

no seriously you sound like you will look great

have a deffo brill time

Crystaltips · 06/01/2006 12:43

put it this way ... if they are focussing on your legs - then you can stop worrying about your "muffin-top tummy" ( your words not mine )

hotmama · 06/01/2006 12:44

Depends on how good your legs are. Some people shouldn't be flashing their legs irrespective of their age - they just have crap legs (I'm included in this group).

If you have good legs then show them off, as you say you are going to be wearing opaque tights you won't look muttony imo - go for it!

puddle · 06/01/2006 12:44

Outfit sounds fab SD

Dingle · 06/01/2006 12:46

WEll I am approaching 40- fast and occasionally wear a shorter skirt ( above the knee but not micro!)

TBH I think it depends on your legs, not your age, and also what you wear with it. I wouldn't dream about wearing a shorter skirt without opaque tights!{grin] and its usually accompanied by a polo neck jumper and boots with a low heel.

In the summer I am very self consious of my legs and wear long skirts.

spacedonkey · 06/01/2006 12:48

The rest of my body is going to pot but the legs seem to be holding up, so I'm going to go for it on the basis of CT's theory that the legs will distract attention from the muffin belly

Can't believe I call myself a feminist

SO GLAD I CONSULTED MUMSNET! I can now enjoy my evening without fear

I have agreed to dress like a whore to distract from spacedonkey's alleged mutton outfit

Crystaltips · 06/01/2006 13:09

Janh · 06/01/2006 13:11

Doesn't it depend entirely on the 37-yr-old legs?
There are sweet young things whose sweet young legs shouldn't be seen at all.

KateMossinredredskinnypants · 06/01/2006 15:41

I just turned 38, and have fficially given up miniskirts, still keep them for memories, and occasionally trying on in private, to see if my legs have transformed overnight.
I think just below the knee look best, too long is too mumsy, well on me they are!
If you look good in miniskirts then wear them,
but with opaque tights...PLEASE

Mercy · 06/01/2006 15:51

Sounds like a good outfit to me. How short is short though?

Oovavu · 06/01/2006 16:05

sounds fine but be sure to avoid the 1661 effect (looking 16 from the back, but 61 from the front) !

KateMossinredredskinnypants · 06/01/2006 16:07
