Definitive rules for choosing coloured tights please!!!

I'm struggling to decide what colour rights for a maroon dress.

What are your definitive rules for choosing coloured rights and matching them to dresses/ skirts???

BTW this is my dress here
I'm thinking black or grey...

I'd wear that colour with navy tights and taupey/brown boots, but that's just me. What boots or shoes would you wear?

I'd wear grey or possibly blue tights with that. Both with brown boots. I'm not sure anyone should be purposefully emulating my style though.

I'm hoping to wear tan/ brown coloured heels. There's nothing in the kitty for new shoes. But I can stretch to tights.
Maybe navy would be better.

There should be rules to stop me getting all over bloody tights FGS!
