fed up with blonde highlights/roots

I've had my dark brown hair highlighted for most of my adult life. I have gone back dark on a few occassions and never felt right. I've always ended up going back to blonde highlights again which has meant ending up with quite dry/damaged hair. I am fed up of paying for highlights every 6 weeks, fed up with the dark roots that show after about two weeks and really want to go back to brown. When I've done it in the past i've never been happy with the shade. I've never got a rich, shiny result and always ended up with a dull brown which I've hated. Has anyone got any tips for me? I can't go too dark as my skin is pale and my eyes are blue and too dark makes me look like a corpse! My hair is just starting to get longer and I don't want to keep subjecting it to bleach as I straighten as well. I also feel it's time for a change but I want it to be right, i really don't want to hate it and try to get the blonde back again. Help!!!

I would go to a salon and explain your worries about going dark - perhaps you can have an all over colour that is lighter than your usual dark .. taking it back down to your natural colour gradually.

You sound just like me in terms of colouring of skin and eyes and I tried highlights last summer - I absolutely loved them for 1 week, the roots started after 2 weeks and then I hated it for the last few weeks. The time and cost to have it done was way beyond what I could afford - I've gone dark but a glossy dark and I love it now

Good luck!

thanks. Glossy dark is what i'd love, not the muddy, dull dark I usually end up with when going back natural!

I have mine done with semi permanent glossing stuff at the hairdresssers. It makes my hair lovely and shiny. I usually alter the shade each time as I get bored easily.

No, I've never been able to achieve the shiny conker look either.

My best colour, and the one I'll have again next time was with toffee and dark blonde highlights but also a semi-perm underneath of a rich brown. It was my way of gradually going darker.

some toffee highlights sound nice to break up the brown. I am definately stuck in the highlight rut and i'm a bit scared to actually go for it. I'm also fed up with the way my highlights look, they are a bit brassy and dull looking now. I'd love a rich, glossy brown with some toffee highlights. I just hope the hairdresser can manage it over the bleach!
