Dyeing white streak in dark brown hair- advice please!

I'm toying with adding a Caitlin Moran-esque white streak in my dark brown hair- example and I'm not sure what colours I need to use in order to do it. There is a Sally hairdressing shop nearish to me. From teenage experience I know I would have to bleach the bit of hair and then put something on top. I want it to be white/white blonde rather than yellow blonde and my streak won't be that massive. I have been test driving a Claire's Accesories clip on streak and it doesn't look too bad.

I would use a salon but the local Toni and Guy have said they won't be able to get it that white.

thanks in advance

I'm sorry but i think it just looks silly. CM is a weird looking girl anyway. I knew a woman who had one of those naturally- she was quite pretty and i always wondered why the hell she didn't gether white streak dyed!

I think it looks affected if it's not real- and a bit odd if it is! sorry.

Bert2e · 21/11/2011 13:55

Good grief - I've just dyed my hair to get rid of my natural grey white streak - I had no idea that it was desirable!

fallenoverflowerpot · 21/11/2011 14:07

a natural one is apparently the sign of some rare but important health condition -though I can't remember what!

Dillydollydaydream · 21/11/2011 14:20

Is it poliosis. There was a family in a Catherine Cookson book who all had white streaks.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/11/2011 14:43

Ooh I'd love to go grey like that naturally but mine come in on the crown.

I think you need to shop around different colourists because it wont be a common request.

Failing that email cm and see where she gets hers done.

picnicbasketcase · 21/11/2011 14:47

I think it looks a bit daft tbh, like Cruella de Vil.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/11/2011 15:23

Is Caitlin Moran's natural?

pinkytheshrunkenhead · 21/11/2011 15:27

I would use a salon but the local Toni and Guy have said they won't be able to get it that white.

Here is the clue - if they could have fleeced you for this they would have but it is very difficult to get right

It is ok if it is natural - not good if pretend

soupforthesoul · 21/11/2011 15:30

The Mallen streak.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/11/2011 15:34

I go to nicky clarkes salon, my stylist did tell me they will refuse something if its technically possible but will look rubbish.

blouseenthusiast · 21/11/2011 15:36

I have a natural white streak. Don't like it

MincePieFlavouredVoidka · 21/11/2011 15:46

Both David and Ed Milliband have them dont they.

PinotHolidaysAreComing · 21/11/2011 16:12

I love them when natural - like Caron Franklin.

But it's a big Nooooooooo to a fake one.

WineOhWhy · 21/11/2011 16:19

I have a natural grey streak. To date I have been dyeing it but the streak is at the front where my hair naturally parts and the white roots become visible very quickly (I am talking 2 weeks max). I am not sure what to do about it - whether to just accept the streak or accept I need to dye my hair (or a bit of it) every 2 weeks or lighten my (very dark) hair all over and build in some blonder streaks either at the front or throughout my hair so the roots dont become as noticeable as quickly.

What do others do?

PinotHolidaysAreComing · 21/11/2011 16:27

Wine leave it au naturel. It's tres sophisticated innit. I'm Envy

ujjayi · 21/11/2011 17:41

I am considering leaving my white streaks au naturel the next time I have the rest of my hair coloured. I have something akin to Caitlin Moran's/Caryn Franklin's streak and am fed up with having to have the rest of my hair coloured just because the white is showing through again.

Melfish · 21/11/2011 18:45

Thanks for the advice ladies- I wish I had a natural grey streak but just some odd hairs at the mo. Wasn't thinking of channeling Ed Miliband but am after one last bash at a stripy do before I get too old. Have got an appt at a small salon who are going to put in a couple of foils in and see how it goes.

I'll swap you mine? Bane of my life, trying to dye it all of the time.

WineOhWhy · 21/11/2011 23:37

So given i have been dyeing my streak to date, if I now want to go au naturel, do I justly grow out the dye ( which will look awful for quite a while) or will I be able to dye it back to it's natural grey colour?

Sorry to crash your thread melfish.

SilkStalkings · 22/11/2011 09:42

CM has hers bleached and a silver blue tone put in according to one of her blog entries.
Wineohwhy: Grow it as long as you can bear then get a salon to put in a fringe and some layers around the face. Then get it cut again within 6wks.
