Growing out a crop

My hair is currently in an Emma Watson style crop. I have started to feel quite boyish with it, particularly when I am not wearing make-up so have decided to grow it out.

How on earth do I do that without looking like the Dulux dog?!

As soon as it is past the ear lobes have it shingle cut at the back so it is a bob shape. This get rid of the dreaded mullet and allows you to grow the layers down. Just keep having the back trimmed in until the hair covers the nape.

I'm doing this at the moment, growing out a short crop into a 'choppy bob' (so the hairdresser tells me Grin). It was his idea, as I wanted a change but I dreaded doing it for the reason you describe. He convinced me to keep getting it cut regularly, and he would shape it each time so it was manageable and could still be called a 'style'. We've kept it short at the back while I grow down the top & sides. So far its taken about 6 months (not there yet) but it is manageable and a lot of people have commented on how nice it is, even though its not finished.

So I think the answer is its do-able, but you will need to keep getting it cut and styled regularly so as to ensure it doesn't drive you round the bend. Either that or invest in a wig/hat Grin.

I was having it trimmed every 5 weeks. So basically then, I still need to have the back done the same amount while I grow the top and sides?

I'm doing this at the moment too - I've posted about this before; aiming to get to this and then keep growing it from there.

Another picture. And another one.
