I am trying to take more care of my appearance. i admire those women who look effortlessly polished. I am not looking for high maintainance, just a more refined look.
I have 4 children and am a sahm. I never wear make up, and would like a smart casual look, rather than comfort dressing! help

Have a look at the other thread on this page about Best Confidence Boosters. Lots of good ideas for quick fixes. Not so much about clothes, more about skin/body but it's a start. In terms of clothes, I tend to think investing in a good coat is your best bet at this time of year.

Here are mine:

Wear earrings - can just be small studs - but seems to always make people look a bit more put together.

If you don't wear make up now - wouldn't suggest you start trowelling it on, but you could try a little translucent powder and then some browny pinky blusher. The bare escentuals starter kit is pretty good - you hardly have to use any to get the natural no make up makeup look. But don't let the DC's anywhere near it or you will have clouds of powder everywhere!

Get/wear basic but good plain tops and add colour etc with cheap scarves. Primark have loads of them which means you can get a few to mix them up, doesn't matter if DC's pinch them (or use as hankies) Plus again, a scarf to me always seems to pull an outfit together a bit more.

Sort out eyebrows - even if dark, often a good idea to define them a bit with some eyeshadow the right colour and a stiff little brush. When I do it, I get compliments about looking 'well' and 'cheerful'; when I don't, people ask me if I'm 'tired'. Bastards.

Clean hair, which is nicely cut. Have it cut every six weeks.

Nice nails.

Fewer clothes, but nicer ones. Buy to flatter rather than what is "in".

Agree about the eyebrows. If you have groomed eyebrows and well looked after skin, you can go out and about with just a bit of vaseline on your lips and some cream blush.

Always clean and blow dried hair.

Stand up straight and walk like you own the place.

right , thanks. I can go months without a haircut. Its odd as I like the children to be smart when they leave the house!

Nice hair - and defo NO GREY roots!
Nice neat eyebrows and tinted eyelashes.
Use Garnier BB cream as a nice moisturiser and flaw blurrer and vaseline or lipgloss. Clinique does a good tube gloss - so no need to faff with brushes and the like.

Silver earrings and lip gloss!
