Oriental Style Dress - preferably plain black!

I tried this on the other day. It was a lovely fit and suited me really well, nicely disguising my lumps and bumps and giving me a waist. Only problems were a) way too expensive b) fabric felt a bit cheap considering the price tag c) the armholes seemed very big, and I havent got the most attractive pit area/upperarms

What I'd really like is something similar, but in plain black, and preferably with cap sleeves or at least non-gaping armholes, that doesnt look like a beauty salon uniform. I also dont want one thats in satin style fabric, i.e. not shiny please. On and not quite (anywhere near) that steep in price :)

Has anyone seen one like that? I'm sure they are out there. I've been trawling ebay, but cant quite find one that fits the bill. I really want plain as the shoes I have are VERY decorative, but I guess some red would be ok.

Oh - I'm a 12-14

Love those shoes.

Fraid the only oriental style dresses that I have seen are the shiny Jane Norman ones or the other Phase Eight one that has the red tapework on it.

Nothing like as nice, but similar shape? Not available to buy online, and has a (possibly unnecessary) shapewear slip inside it.

i love chinese dresses!

I googled long sleeved cheongsam and got this site, might be worth a look

Pretty!

Anywhere near a big city with a Chinatown area?? I know there are a couple of shops like this in Camden market too.

It is floral but mostly black. And very very cheap.

I got their black lace dress that was in demand last year and the fabric was actually really nice and the quality is good.

you mean a qi pao? you can get a tailor/dressmaker in chinatown to knock one up. otherwise i have a plain shanghai tang one. but it was expensive. beware satin, get a matte fabric.

I've seen the jAne Norman ones on ebay, but like you say, shiny. Also saw the red phase 8 one but really dont like it (in real life or in pictures). The Gok Wan one I kind of disregarded a few weeks back, after observing the comments on a thread here! They dont have them in our local sainsburys as its too small.
Catsmamma that site is awesome. I need more time to look at that.
I'm not near (a) chinatown no. I dont really have the time to get into London sadly.
I LOVE the Peacocks dress - the shape is really lovely. However I really didnt want a long one or a patterned one or a shiny one (I'm still flipping tempted lol)
I had a look at the shanghai tang website, but yes, way past my price tag.
I'll keep looking!!

Oh I'm loving the Peacocks one - why not get it as a standby one Lynniep and wear with plain shoes?

Sariska · 10/11/2011 18:42

Also loving the Peacocks one. Does anyone have any idea how long it is? (I can't find measurements on the site and am nowhere near a store.)
