Spot treatment for 30yr old

Ponyclubmum · 07/11/2011 15:04

Need some help please! I thought I'd outgrown spots in my early 20's, but for the past year or so I've had quite a few outbreaks. Are products like Clearasil etc the best thing to use? Or are they designed for teenage skin, and not my 'older' skin? Is there a face wash designed for more mature skin? Or does it not matter what I use?

TIA

I'm 27 and suffering!! I tend to use Freederm gel alongside my usual products. Things like clearasil can strip your skin, which then produces more oil. I find a gentle cleanser alongside a spot treatment and changing pillowcases 3 x a week really helped

Ponyclubmum · 07/11/2011 17:05

Thanks brighthair, I'll have a look at Freederm. I have really dry skin across my forehead and cheeks, so don't want anything that strips my skin. Might have to invest in some more pillowcases too, and see if that helps!

Avene Cleanance is very good - a gel wash and light cream. Dr Sebagh cream for individual spots.

brighthair · 07/11/2011 17:33

I use liz Earle cleanse and polish, then Freederm where needed and moisturise as normal
I used to use quinoderm which clears everything, but it is quite drying

Anything with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, followed by a non-comedogenic moisturiser would work.

Have you ever seen the acne.org website? It's an American site but here is a forum with advice on products available in the UK.

Ponyclubmum · 08/11/2011 18:45

Thanks for your help everyone, I've written down all your recommendations and I'll go and investigate what Boots have to offer.

I'll check out that site tonight mathanxiety, thanks!

highly recommend Acne.org regime my skin is the best it has been in 18 years.

iloveeverton · 08/11/2011 18:59

Another recommending the regime my skin has never been so good! I was covered in spots a few months ago.

MoreSenseThanMoney · 08/11/2011 19:17

Yet another recommendation for the Acne.org regime. I don't follow it strictly but the daily application of benzoyl peroxide has left my skin the best it's been in years.

I never get spots now and any marks I had have almost faded - I'm confident going out without makeup now and I thought that would never happen!

I use Avene Cleanance K cream at night and have found that good too.

Ponyclubmum · 09/11/2011 15:43

Wow, that site is really helpful! I wish it had been around when I was a teenager.

I think I'm going to do something similar to you MoreSenseThanMoney, and not follow the regime strictly - I'll probably use the BP in the morning (I don't have horrendous acne, so hopefully just using the BP once a day will be enough) and use the Avene Cleanance K cream at night. I'll get the Avene Soapless gel cleanser to use morning and evening too.

The only BP products I can see in Boots are Oxy 10 lotion and PanOxyl 10 Aquagel. Anyone recommend either of these over the other?

The PanOxyl 10 is very strong and drying. Ask over the pharmacist counter at boots for PanOxl Aquagel in 2.5 strength

MyOtherNameIsBetter · 09/11/2011 16:33

Oxy 10 is the same active ingredient just branded so more expensive

LDNmummy · 09/11/2011 16:55

My DH can get outbreaks at times but never when he uses this face wash. He also uses the cream to moisturise his face after washing it with the face wash. When he stops using this product you can see a difference within a few days as he will start to get one or two spots.

I have also been using it as post pregnancy hormones have been playing havoc with my previously spot free face. Since using it I don't break out either so I would definitely recommend it.

Bugsy2 · 09/11/2011 17:00

I'm 42 & still get spots. I now have frown lines & spots - is there no justice. Would add my vote to freederm too. Really takes down the redness.

mathanxiety · 09/11/2011 18:52

Don't put anything with 10% benzoyl peroxide on your face. It's far too irritating and drying and will lead to more not less acne.

Use at most 2.5%. BP comes in different strengths.
