Dying over highlights at home...what will happen??

So, I got some highlights in my light-medium brown hair, and I hate them. Oops, big waste of money. I want to go medium brown using a home hair dye but I'm worried the highlighted bits could go too red, or grab loads of colour and go too dark. Has anyone dyed over salon highlights with home hair dye? What were the results?

i dyed my bleached highlights with a semi-perm and it came out lovely, the highlights were a little lighter but all in all much better all round!

I also dyed over highlights in my medium brown hair but I didn't use a brown in case the highlights took the colour funny. I used a medium/dark blonde which is alot lighter than I am but if you look at the box, you will see they usually have an example of how it will work on light/medium brown.
