Looking at Xmas gifts- is MB the real McCoy, or is it style over substance?

I am never sure whether they are crazily expensive for not much, or if they are really good products.

I love it. I use one of their conditioners. Tried it in a hotel and made my hair look fab. I also now use their shower gel and hand wash. They make me smile. I am not the type to buy fancy toiletries but love these.

Haven't used women stuff, but Cracked Black Pepper is THE sexiest man smell EVER !
I have bought it for every boyfriend / lover & DH Grin

GetOrfMo1Land · 01/11/2011 12:21

I have their ubiquitous soap and body lotion in a holder in the bathroom. Someone bought me a £100 voucher and I had to spend it. I don't think it's that brilliant - I fill up the empty M&B dispensers with baylis and Harding crap.

DontWantToHaveSex · 01/11/2011 12:43

I like it, and I would be absolutely delighted to receive it, but I wouldn't ever buy it for myself. Not because I wouldn't spend that on myself, I would (as a treat), but i think there are better products out there for the money.

I like the MB hand washes, hand lotions and bubbles/body wash (if you're buying bubbles or body wash, buy a pump to go with the bottle - less waste and it makes it last longer). But I think their body moisturisers are poor for the money, and the candles and room sprays and the like are an absolute rip off.

For me, for the money, I would rather buy bath and body products from This Works (get them in Boots, and get points), Burt's Bees (a lot less - £10 per item), Cath Kidston (even less - the handcream is fab), and, if I'm really splashing out, Laura Mercier.

My personal favourite for body products are the body range that Clinique does. I don't think you can beat it. The body comfort moisturiser is the best thing on the market as far as I'm concerned, as is their exfoliator.

I've never had any other expensive stuff to compare with but the Molton Brown I have does make my skin really soft and the smell lasts a lot longer compared to my usual sanex, nivea or whatever is on offer.
Lots of the smells are not my taste but there are a couple I love. I have just bought some for MIL and my two BIL's wives for Christmas. They are very brand aware though and would buy it even if it stank.

plipplops · 01/11/2011 12:49

I think their shower gel is really good but get a pump dispenser if you can as a little goes a long way. Agree with PP about the moisturisers and hand creams though, not been very impressed with them (think the Body Shop is much better)

snowballinashoebox · 01/11/2011 14:12

My dh loves mb especially the cracked black pepper, agree it is a lovely smell. He has a very grubby job and reckons it is the only thing he has ever used which gets rid of oil, grease etc.
So I wonder if it is a bit on the strong/ chemical side but it does make him feel luxurious which as we all know is important!

If you sign up with their email they are always offering deals. Their christmas boxes are really rather lovely.

MackerelOfFact · 01/11/2011 14:17

It's absolutely awful IMO. Horribly over-scented and distinctly average performance-wise. I haven't found a single fragrance that doesn't give me a headache. I love buying toiletries and I'm not usually fussy in the slightest, but I don't touch Molton Brown with a bargepole.

Gingefringe · 01/11/2011 14:19

Agree with pipplops that body lotions and hand creams are nothing special, but the shower gels are really nice. I prefer L'occitane which is about the same price range.

NewChoos · 01/11/2011 16:24

I like some of the products. Currently using the wild indigo shower gel and it smells lovely. I also use the hand wash and lotion - at the moment, the white mulberry which is nice too, lots of people have commented on the fragrance In a good way!). I didn't rate their face moisturisers or cleansers.

Another fan of L'Occitane and also Origins.

Pinot · 01/11/2011 16:41

I prefer L'Occitane. Spesh the Shea Butter range. After that I could eat myself.

MB is too coloured for my bathroom.
