Help! Are pale bridesmaids dresses allowed?

Help, having dilemma over bridesmaid dress - I'm due to be maid of honour in Feb. I'm the only bridesmaid except for a flower girl. Allowed to choose my own dress and colour - bride is wearing full, white, strapless dress with either a burgundy or gold sash. Full white wedding in a formal setting.

So...not being in the first flush of youth (37!) I'm avoiding too much frou-frou and found a lovely MaxMara satin fitted, draped, knee-length dress, quite Reiss like. But it's quite pale - oyster/goldy-grey colour, difficult to describe. WHen trying it on, I was thinking it would match with bride's gold sash but now I'm not too sure. Bride lives nowhere near me so can't see it but has more or less said, don't worry aobutmatching, if you like it get it. Other friends have said, ooh no, you can't wear a pale neutral colour as it looks too bride-like.

Plus, it's a bargain - vintage (and therefore I can't link to a photo of it). I would match it with pale high heels (Prada, mix of pale lilac, diamante & snakeskin - much classier than they sound, I promise!).

What do you think? Are pale bridesmaid dresses a no-no unless you're Pippa Middleton?!

If its OK for Pippa surely its OK for anyone.

Course you can. If the bride is fine with it then that's all that matters. My 2 bridesmaids were in creamy gold.

Creamy gold - that about describes it. Thanks for your comments, I jsut don't want to look like I'm trying to outdo the bride but as she is both younger and prettier than me, plus will be wearing a full on bridal gown, hopefully people won't think mutton/lamb when they see me!
