What do you wear with dresses to stay warm?

I've got a couple of tea dresses and was planning on wearing one to a christening in November.
What do I wear with it to stay warm?
Cardi?
Jacket?
If either of the above what shape?

Dress is navy with pink and yellow/ orange small flowers if that helps.

Tia! :)

Thick tights. Boots. Socks too if necessary. Vest under dress.

Then if you still need something on top (the idea is that you might not, depending on temperature of environment - ideally you want to be able to wear the dress as the top layer, at least when you are in warmer rooms) a neatly fitting cardi, not too long, for my money. (And coat scarf etc for outdoors.)

It's the bare arms that I struggle with. I never get my legs out so tights, boots etc sorted! Grin

Depending on dress you could wear a thin long sleeved top underneath it?

MrsS01 · 05/10/2011 17:15

what about a shrug?

Whenisitmysleepytime · 05/10/2011 18:55

It's sort of a 50s style I guess. Fitted to half with full ish skirt. Don't think shrug would work.
May look for long sleeve t to go underneath but think that would make the dress a lot more casual. Maybe too casual for a christening?

Are blazers/ jackets out?

Well fitted shortish blazer type jacket would look lovely. Think kirsty allsop ish

NhameCage · 05/10/2011 19:13

Long sleeved dress is the answer for winter but try finding a long sleeved dress that isn't a knit dress or a t-shirt dress, it is like gold dust. But if you can find the perfect one then you don't have to do the cardigan/shrug thing and can just throw your coat on top. Anyone seen any?

NhameCage · 05/10/2011 19:15

BTW, I've not answered the op's question, sorry. Was going to suggest a jersey turtle neck underneath - can look really good depending on the dress.

NinkyNonker · 05/10/2011 19:45

I agree, sometimes a turtleneck is perfect.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 06/10/2011 09:19

Can anyone find me a jacket/ blazer? To go with navy tea dress?
I think a long sleeve underneath will look too casual for a christening.

Pleeeease! :)

Thin thermal underwear - Uniqlo Heat Tech is amazing - and a smart, fine-knit cardigan over the top. Possibly also a pashmina but if your core is warm enough a cardi will be enough.

If you're wearing tights, a full slip would be better under the dress to stop it clinging. You could still wear a heat tech vest under the slip for maximum warmth!

New look have some really nice light weight blazer style jackets just now. In lots of different colours. They have black lapels so they look kinda teddy boy like. Would be perfect for a 50s outfit

Whenisitmysleepytime · 06/10/2011 12:32

Voscar- I can't find them online. But they sound promising.

Trouble is I have v broad shoulders so often have to size up but then the rest of me is swamped.

Any other ideas?

What's your budget?

Whenisitmysleepytime · 06/10/2011 20:16

Budget is minimal- think Dorothy Perkins rather than French connection.
