Help!!! No idea what to wear tonight!!!

It's DPs birthday tomorrow so we are going out tonight. It's on a steam pulled dining train where DP volunteers. It says smart dress code.

I dont know what to wear. I have 2 choices really.

1. A black wrap dress which comes to just above the knees
2. A purple maxi dress.

I love both of them, but I don't know which to wear. I'm worried the black on is a bit boring though.

Any ideas??

I'd say the black one, as men don't understand maxi dresses.

It won't be boring then? I was going to wear a red shrug thing to add some colour

DP is useless and says I look good in both. But the black one is shorter
