Quilted jackets

I'm tempted by a quilted jacket, as they look, practical, comfy and warm. But according to the magazines, are the next big thing; however, i feel into the aviator jacket trap last year. Are quilted jackets going to be vaguely fashionable or am I going to look even more mumsy than usual?

theyv'e been around ages, but I have seen alot of teens wearing them recently, problem is I remember my gran in one....can't shake it off.

I like them tho, from a practical point of view..

smartyparts · 19/09/2011 21:43

my dh just bought me this

But, honestly, I feel like a pensioner in it and it's going back. The death knell was when my mum tried it on and decided she'd like one!

lobsters · 19/09/2011 21:54

I've just been looking at the Next and Boden versions. I am worried about the looking like my mum thing

Its a fine line, 'granny chic' looks funky on an 18 yr old. Looks middle aged on the likes of us.

peedieworky · 19/09/2011 22:05

I just ordered a red one from Next. Fear it may be sent back!!

miche8 · 19/09/2011 22:09

i got the next longer belted one today, the model looks great in it, i did not. Have seen lots of young people wearing them which means i shouldn't.

serin · 19/09/2011 22:44

Was just about to start a thread about Barbour! DD would like a quilted jacket for Christmas, she is 14 and would no doubt wear it with a Wills micro skirt, leggings and wellies Hmm

I know the queen has one but today I happened to be in a bit of a dodgy area and I was surprised to see a group of scallies/thugs standing outside a pub with their lagers and big eff off dogs. All wearing Barbour.

Has it gorn the way of Burberry one wonders? Shock

Decorhate · 20/09/2011 06:55

They were briefly fashionable for teens back in the late 70s too - at least where I lived [old person emoticons]. Can never bear to buy things if I wore them first time round...

CeliaFate · 20/09/2011 08:00

I agree they look cool in an ironic way on a 20 something. It's like tweed - looks funky on a young, skinny minx. I try it on? Instant Miss Marple. Sad

forrestgump · 20/09/2011 14:40

the Barbour polarquilt is on my birthday list. It is totally stunning on, Ive finally found a jacket with a belt that doesnt make me look frumpy) I find it so odd however that teens/uni students today are wearing such an expensive jacket. Are students not skint any more then?

We used to have a barbours and hunters every christmas off my Nan (I am a farmers daughter)

MrsVoltar · 20/09/2011 16:29

They are very trendy just now.

But think to not look 'mumsy' if you are not twentysomething/teenager then you need to have biker-style linked by forrestgump as opposed to quilted 'old lady' style linked by smartypants.

dexter73 · 20/09/2011 20:13

I have that coat forrestgump and I love it. Not particularly warm though.

MrsCampbellBlack · 20/09/2011 20:15

I have the barbour/anya hindmarch one from last year and love it and wear it loads at this time of year. But agree with dexter that its not overly warm.

smartyparts · 20/09/2011 20:54

I have just got mine out of the box and it's the one Forrestgump linked to, not the one I did.

It is still hideously unflattering though, but maybe on me because I am not a nubile 20 something. I'm slim and 5'7" but it makes me look like a pillow.

Dh bought it as he thought it would be a good for walking the dog in. Confused

southeastastra · 20/09/2011 20:55

they look hideous, even on teenagers (and btw every teenage girl in the universe has one) don't go there

i saw one with a garish 'pauls boutique' in big gold letters on the back the other day - really chavtastic

lobsters · 20/09/2011 20:59

Thanks for those, i can't wear one with a belt due to stomach having been replaced with a beach ball. I like this boden one

www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Womens-Coats-Jackets/Jackets/WE306/Womens-Quilted-Jacket.html?NavGroupID=2

Or this next one

But I think you are all right and not being a trendy teen/ twenty something i will just look far too mumsy

ginandtonicplease · 20/09/2011 21:21

Sorry girls but now they've hit primark and new look they are the official Chav uniform and choice of school girls....shame as they are a really good jacket - warm, lightweight and shower proof.

MrsCampbellBlack · 20/09/2011 21:23

I have this one and I really don't think its mumsy.

I also think as with most things - its how you wear it. So I wear mine a lot with skinnies and boots and nice bag and it looks good - well I think so.

forrestgump · 20/09/2011 21:32

but copies in Primark are a bit like imitation heel collapsing cheapo Uggs arnt they?

I want the real thing, I want my barbour, I borrowed my friends red one and found it plenty warm enough. I NEED it!!!

MrsCampbellBlack · 20/09/2011 21:35

Yeap I agree Forrest.

Mine is most definitely not primark [nose in air] Wink

And you know most stuff gets copied but it doesn't mean I stop using my mulberry handbag - there is a big difference between a good quality version and a cheap copy.

forrestgump · 20/09/2011 21:37

here here MrsCB!

MrsVoltar · 20/09/2011 21:47

agree, I have one that isn't Barbour but its a good brand, well-made & not cheapo, I have been amazed at all the copies in the fashion shops (something I got first is so trendy Confused)

gapants · 20/09/2011 21:51

They have reached their tipping point and have become far too ubiquitous. Non.
