Big curlers in fringe

What does this do? I keep seeing people on Big Brother wearing one big curler in their fringe, does it just smooth it out or does it actually curl it? Do you need a longish fringe? I can't imagine the end result, I'm sure if I did it I'd end up with some ridiculous hump on my forehead.

I have completely straight fine hair and I like a very long fringe. I put a curler in it to just slightly turn the ends under. If I didn't I would have a dead straight blunt cut fringe which is a hard look to pull off.
