What are the detergents found in toiletries called?

I have been told to avoid detergents for DS' skin I'm using Weleda baby products and was under the impression these were natural or free from nasties. GP has said I am wrong.
Am I?
I tried DR Google for answers but alas I have been rendered even more confused.

Any ideas oh wise ones?

Or perhaps what I should have said: What ingredients am I looking for on the back that I need to avoid?

SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), SLES (sodium lauryl ether sulfate) and parabens are ones I watch out for.

Oh and Triclosan in toothpaste.

But there are so many (and they often have 'natural' sources so can be sneaked in as a natural sounding product)

What exactly did the doc say? There is a train of thought that it can be more risky for children with eczema and similar to go completely natural as the products don't have the same preservatives in them to prevent any infection etc.

SLS/SLES, sulphates, parabens are buzz words for natural products but they are only the start and there are many things they can be replaced with that are just as nasty. . Parabens are preservatives, most commonly hydroxy benzoates with names on ingredients lists such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben. Anything listed as 'parfum' or 'fragrance' does not need to be specified as a specific ingredient so can be pretty much anything and does not need to be licensed.I always avoid anything listed with Disodium EDTA, the word 'benzyl' or 'linone' somewhere in it.

I could go on a bit about this, the best thing to do is buy a book if you are really interested. Otherwise, go for products that have a short ingredient list and don't sound too chemically. You cannot completely avoid all the chemicals, you just need to cut down as much as possible.
