It seems such a confusion, they believed a 41 was an 8, and yet in other shops a 41 is a 7. I know I only fit a 42 (8).

and yet asos says 41 is a 7
asos

and here a 42 is an 8
international shoe sizes

ARGHHH...............!

i always thought 40 was a 7. I'm a 39 or 6 in pretty much every shop.

mousymouse · 15/08/2011 11:16

I wear size 40 or 41, which turns out anything between 6 and 7.

I once argued about kids shoe sizes in germany. not pleasant.

TattyDevine · 15/08/2011 11:16

40 is a 7 in every shoe and shop I have ever known...

Before having children I was a 39 which was a 6.

Gillybobs · 15/08/2011 11:17

I have the same argument all the time, it varies between brands so there doesnt seem to be a definitive answer sadly. Im a 7 and a 41 is perfect for me so I agree with you, my friend who is between a 6 and a 7 finds a 40 perfect.

Shanghai · 15/08/2011 11:17

aarrrggggg I have this argument all the time and it drives me crazy - you are right - 42 is a little over an 8 and 41 is a little over a 7 (but I mean a little - like not even 1/4)..... I've come to the conclusion that they have been cutting the sizes over the last few years cos more and more I find that what they say is an 8 is very definitely not!!!

Shoe shops that still consider 42 an 8 I've found are: Next, M&S..... er..... Duo of Bath....Tescos randomly enough..... Can't think of any more but most shops only go up as high as a 41 anyway... sigh!

Catsmamma · 15/08/2011 11:17

i try shoes on from 39-42...and have shoes in all sorts of sizes!

makes me wild that they are all so different and non standard!

I would say generally a 39 is a six and an eight is a 42.....so that leaves seven covering 4o and 41

Not sure I'd row with someone about it though! :P

tethersend · 15/08/2011 11:18

40 USED to be a 7.

Then it all changed and I don't know why.

I am an 8 and 41 in topshop fits me perfectly, but in next is too small.

tethersend · 15/08/2011 11:18

and I have vintage shoes which are a 40 and still fit.

lynniep · 15/08/2011 11:19

yeah it does vary. like clothes its flipping annoying. I take a 7 although one of my feet is nearer 6.5. I've always bought 40's. Now and again I fit into 39's and 41s are usually too big.

TattyDevine · 15/08/2011 11:37

Oh it changed - cool! That means my feet didn't just unexplainably get fat somwhere along the way! Grin

(Actually I'm sure the ligaments did spread during pregnancy - and I'm pretty sure they are not going to go back) Angry

AlpinePony · 15/08/2011 11:45

Why argue about the numbers? Why not just try the shoe on?

I take anything from a 39 to a 41. If it fits, it fits.

tethersend · 15/08/2011 11:50

It's annoying when ordering online though, Alpine.

RamblingRosa · 15/08/2011 12:01

Hmm, I'm either a 39 or a 40 and I'd say that translates into a 6 or 6.5. But I've noticed it really varies from shop to shop. It would make sense to have more standardised shoe sizes!

HerdOfTinyElephants · 15/08/2011 12:04

A 41 is anything from a 7 to an 8, depending on shop. I always just say I want a 41-42 now and let the shop decide what that means in their sizing.

madammecholet · 15/08/2011 12:17

When I say 'argue', I suppose I really mean 'healthy discussion'. I was saying a 42 was an 8, she was adament it was a 41. I am more frustrated at the general lack of standardisation rather than the individual shop.

Also, its a pain when you have size 8 feet as you cannot find decent shoes, I really don't understand why some manufacturers don't make up to a size 42, thats all.

I'm not losing sleep over it, its just annoying.

polyhymnia · 15/08/2011 12:24

Yes, it's all very confusing.

I'm a 41 almost always (sometimes 42 in Boden whose sizings are weird). I know perfectly well that this is larger than a 7 - about a 7 and a half - though I too have had shop assistants swear blind it's a 7. It isn't!

I usually just ask for a 41 now. Most of the places I shop use that system but, in those few shops which still use 'old ' sizing. I ask for a 7 and a half or an 8. (Am an 8 in Fitflop, for example).

I just wish they'd all go over to the much easier 'continental' numbering, stick with it, and make it consistent!

wildfig · 15/08/2011 12:52

It's only really a pain when you have feet at the top of the range, because there isn't usually a size bigger! I take a 42 where it's available, and can squeeze my way into a 41 if necessary, but I've written off Kurt Geiger/KG completely, as their 41 is nowhere near big enough for an 8; it's much closer to a 7.

HellonHeels · 15/08/2011 12:55

LK Bennett does 42s. You can also get them in Top Shop.

I am an 8 and usually fit a 41.
