What to wear for Christmas drinks?

Dh & I have been invited for 'Christmas Drinks' & as I rarely go to any social occasions,I have no idea what we should wear.

It sounds quite posh,it is at the local manor, which is owned by a lady who is quite famous,so I don't want to show myself up..

Any advice for the socially & stylishly inept?

I have no style at all so ignore me..

but i would go for something simple short dress in a dark colour with silver necklace and lovely shoes, maybe a bit of cashmere in case it's draughty

How about a nice pair of wide trousers, a little top with maybe a bit of sparkle, and a glamourous wrap thing? Ditto having no style, the grown ups will be along shortly I'm sure

Oh no,I possess none of these items.I haven't bought new clothes for years, apart from jersey tops & boring every day stuff.I'm so out of touch with what is in this year.I'll have to go shopping & see what I can find.I like the sound of wide trousers but am on the skinny side,so don't know if I'll look clownlike in them.Sparkly tops sound good & so does cashmere, although my budget won't stretch to that.

What do you suggest for dh?

Once I've stopped panicking about clothes,I'll start panicking about not knowing what to say to people. The days that I'm not at home with the dd's,I'm working with plants,so don't get many chances for intelligent conversation!Plus I only know Mrs famous lady to wave to,& have never spoken to her.panic,panic,panic.......
