Wrap Dresses - flattering or not?

Specifically, Boden's. Need a dress to wear for meal out but not too partyish.
What are they like on pot bellies?

ooh ooh a style thing i feel qualified to comment on.

IME wrap dresses are uber flattering. dh calls mine my "paul daniels dress" - ie its magic.

tried a boden one from the summer but sent back - bit short for me and quite straight cut (i go in and out). french connection and monsoon have nice ones.

I agree that they are very flattering - but - if they are wrap all the way down - ie there's a split in the skirt you HAVE to be aware that they fall apart and show lots of leg and you HAVE to be comfortable with that. There's nothing worse than seeing someone constantly pulling at a wrap skirt to cover themselves up. And they are always a lot more revealing in reality than in a changing room.

hativity · 02/12/2005 14:37

just looked at the Boden ones - they look great and I'm not sure but looks like the skirt is intact

KBearthePolarBear · 02/12/2005 14:39

my boss is the Boden Queen and looks great in their wrap dress. I think pattern is the key!

merrySOAPBOXingday · 02/12/2005 14:45

I have a black wrap dress which is really very flattering.

I think you do have to have some boobs though - I don't think they look great on the flat chested

FlameRobin · 02/12/2005 14:46

They look hideous on me I have a sticky out ledge like bum, and they just sort of hang off me.... so beware if you are a sticky out bum person.

If you couldn't get away with the pleated little skirt look (on me I had pleats at front, weird spikes at back ), then best to leave it

teeavee · 02/12/2005 15:00

the patterned ones would prob be more flattering than plain

if you buy Boden, go for long length rather than standard if youre 5'7" or over

and boobs are a must

teeavee · 02/12/2005 15:01

anyone know when the Boden sale starts, btw?

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 02/12/2005 15:01

I have a plain black one I bought from Sainsbury's. and it's fab. Not sure about the boden ones tho.

merrySOAPBOXingday · 02/12/2005 15:03

I love wrap dresses but they look horrible on me
I think I am too flat chested and have a not very defined waist - I think they probably suit hour glass/ pear shapes better

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 02/12/2005 16:19

I have nice bum and boobs but am self conscious about tummy. And haven't really got a waist - but that's what the belt is for, isn't it?
Do I need the longer length to keep it decent?
I like the toffee apple one and would wear with my knee length tan leather boots.
They look very versatile in magazine spreads but have never actually tried one on. And because it's a 2 week wait by the time it gets here I won't have any time to find something else if it's rubbish!

I don't think you need a waist if you have big boobs

northerner · 02/12/2005 16:26

Love that one Cupcakes, will look fab with boots. I have 2 wrap dresses and they are so versatile. Look great over jeans/trousers too!

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 02/12/2005 16:28

aha, northerner! I was hoping I could wear over jeans but didn't write it down in case it looked odd! Do I need to get the reg length for jean wearing (I don't want to be swamped). I'm 5'7.

I don't have big boobs, more medium, of a pleasing size.

OP posts:
northerner · 02/12/2005 16:37

Yeah I'd go for regular, will look odd if too long.

Boden dress arrived today (v pleased as website says it's still 1 week till in stock) and it's fab. Really, pleased with it. Can't wait for meal next week to wear it and then will wear it loads over jeans and with polo necks underneath.
Can you tell I'm happy with it?
