Shortening dress covered with sequins...?

I've ordered the most fabulous dress for my 40th birthday party:

It fits perfectly, apart from being far too long - not surprising, given the model is 5 ft 10 and I am 5 ft 4.

I'm happy to pay to have it shortened, but will it be ridiculously difficult to shorten it without half the sequins coming off????! Anyone know about this kind of thing?

I had a chiffon sequin dress shortened by a couple of inches. They couldn't cut through it as it had a triple row of tiny beads around the hem and cutting through it would have made the beads and sequins drop off. So they folded it over and reversed hemmed it keeping the beaded hem (does that make sense)?

Actually the heavier hem made it hang better.

PJ - thanks, but there's too much to be taken off here to fold - not to mention too much density of sequins. It's cutting or nothing. Hmmmm, I think I'll ring the dressmaker I've used before and try to describe the problem to her.

I have had a look and it depends on how the sequins are attached. It looks like they're sewn on in long threads, so your dressmaker will need to carefully remove the sequins on the part that needs turning up whilst ensuring that the thread doesn't run away and take all the sequins with it. It looks like a tricky job but not impossible, so be prepared to pay a little more than usual.

Thanks worldgonecrazy - I think they are on long threads, yes. I don't mind paying a bit more than usual, but not something silly! Unfortunately dressmaker isn't answering the phone and I need to make a decision about sending it back today!

Oh wow, sorry, I know nothing about shortening but that dress is simply stunning!

Sadly the dressmaker I have used before was very dubious about taking the job on. I'm going to take it round to her this afternoon to look at, but I'm not feeling very hopeful right now. I can't possibly wear it without shortening it.

Somewhere that deals with bridal alterations may be able to help. If you have an independant wedding dress shop they may give you the details of the person they use.
