OK - so I've finally gotten round to making an appointment at hairdressers today to get my hair cut and coloured. The cut bit's no problem - but where do I start with colour???????

I colour my hair at home - very occassionally. Last time used a "permanent" colour - so have some very attractive roots and lots of nice grey's showing through. I don't tend to go to hairdressers very often - so what's the best choice for avoiding roots coming through too obviously???

Also - I've always been brunette - or shades of red. But last night DP said "why don't you go blonde??" - why don't I????? Would I be mad to think of blonde highlights? -My natural colour is reddy/mousey brown.

Have you tried a virtual hairstyler like the Marie Claire one to see what different colours look good on you? The hairdresser should be able to tell you if blonde will be too harsh on you but as you are mousey you should be able to carry it off easily - what colour are your eyebrows?

If you have highlights get them to do 3 different shades of blonde to make it look more natural. I find a dark blonde, honey/golden blonde and a bit of light blonde looks really good :)

Ooooooh maybe some blonde highlights? I used to home-colour my hair every 6 weeks and the thought of highlights used to make me laugh - what is a few strands going to do?

But no! The hairdresser dyed my hair like a mousey brown then put these beautiful blonde highlights through it - It really looked amazing, plus when you get a few roots/greys you cant see them as much because your hair isn't all one block of colour iyswim?

Really do reccomend them!

I would keep your general base colour and get a tsection of caramel highlights. They will break things up like the others have said, stop the block colour look, and help with roots, sort of blend it in so you can go longer in between.

It would take more than that to actually "go blonde" but if you start with a tsection and like the colour combo and want to go lighter/brighter next time, have a half head.

So they'll need to do an overall colour and then the highlights? This is going to be £££ isn't it??

If you have the time and money is an issue - get it cut today then wait for an offer in your local paper - I saw one recently that was full head of highlights for under £20 on Wednesday! Or keep your eyes on Groupon/Livingsocial - Or ask your hairdresser which is the most cost-effective way in which to get it done, she may well do it as a discounted package for cut/colour etc?

Back - got caramel highlights all through the under section and then a warm brown tint in between. She didn't do the top section so my roots won't show so much. Still at the flicking it about and wondering if I like it stage! Thanks for the advice (£87.50 for colour and cut - but don't tell DP!!)
