What is so special about hunter wellies?

I am willing to be converted, but if the attraction lies in photos of hunter clad belles swanning around Glastonbury, I'm just not getting it. They are ubiquitous.

Sure they come in pretty patterns, but my feet are so god damn big, only the boys sizes fit, so not much glamour there.

Hate them as they won't fit my fat legs, especially hate them as I've seen them in aubergine Envy and I can't have them.
I grew up on a farm and we always wore Noras, as they are unlined so the cowshit can be hosed out from the inside and wiped dry :)

Well I bought mine 26 years ago and I'm still wearing them !

They're comforatable, even when walking long distances and keep my feet dry

no doubt they function well enough as protective footwear, but the brand has been hijacked so they have become a fashion statement whether you like it or not!

And just because you don't wear them for any other reason than they are comfy someone else is looking and thinking you're 'aspirational' (perish the thought...) Wink

For the record, my wellies are green Puroforts which I have owned for over 10 years and I wear them daily apart from in the summer as we live and work on a farm.

i find aigle much more comfortable.

I have Argyle boots which apparently are a more farmy line made by hunter. They are black and purely for function rather than fashion. Whatever they are, they are comfy, fit my fat calves and allow me to shovel chicken poo and wander through the forest in comfort.

There's nothing special about Hunters. They've been crap since they closed down the factory in Scotland and outsourced production to China. They will last about 3 months of proper heavy use and I don't know anyone who still wears them (and I know lots of horsey/farmer/county/shooter types)

Dunlops are the way to go - made in the UK or Italy (depending on the style) and will last decades. Get the ones with a safety toecap, as they are classed as PPE there is no VAT on them.

Elliptic5 · 02/07/2011 11:17

My PPE Dunlops only lasted 6 months before they split.

Mine are plain green with a really thick sole, they are really comfy and perfect walking the dogs in the woods, gundog work and doing stuff on the yard. I managed to get mine in a sale and know they will last for ages.

But as with everything it all boils down to your own personal taste. I'm definately not a chav though and never get anything to be glam as that's just not me Grin.

The quality has gone massively downhill IMO
