Can someone tell me about makeup lessons/makeovers?

It's my birthday next week, DH & I are having a rare childfree night out. I want some new make up or a new look so that I feel like the adult me and not wearing the make up I wear when I'm "mum".

I like Mac products so I thought a makeover session there might be good.

If you have been for one can you tell me what you thought of the end result and how easy it was to replicate (if you liked it & bought products).

I went for a Mac one and was really disappointed. The girl who did it didn't seem t know what she was doing and my "natural" makeover made me look like a street performer. I had to pay and the fee was redeemable against products
I have booked a Bobbi Brown for Friday - it's free :)

You can have a lesson with Mac (where you keep the products) or a makeover (for about £20), I've got a makeover booked in but my sister has had one and loved it!

I had a Bobbi Brown one a little while ago and found I just looked the same as I do normally. I wanted to come away with make up that looked like the make up artists but I just looked like me. She also said there wasn't really a lipstick I could wear because my lips are small (they're not that small. I'm no Angelina but seriously, I have lips!). It put me off a bit.
I want something that I wouldn't do myself but yes, totally not aiming for the street performer look!

Mac charge, the others don't, or at least I've not found one that charges. Bobbi Brown is free, though I suspect they would want you to at least buy one item.

I've never actively sought to replicate a make over but I haven't had one that makes me look clownlike either.

I had a £50 MAC lesson and it was really good - I think it depends on which person you get on the day.

The end result was a bit OTT for me but some of the techniques she explained I have been able to use in real life and got a couple of brilliant new prods - eyeliner pencil that actually stays put and an eyebrow pencil. Oooo also a paint that stops eyeshadow creasing. Well worth it IMO

Thanks everyone, I think I might go for the MAC one as I have some things I want to buy anyway so I won't be spending any more.

At least it will take me out of my make up comfort zone by the sound of it.

May take some make up remover wipes with me just in case....
