Need new trainers, any recommendations?

So, my Skechers have bitten the dust after 8 years.

What do you wear for every day use and for rough surfaces that shoes are too dainty for but walking boots are too "good" for?

I have just linked to these on another thread. They are ace - more substantial than they perhaps appear with a really nice supportive spongy inner sole so very comfortable. Even if you don't like those, there also lots of other nice looking trainers on the website.

Thanks Lola for the links. Erm, not that I'm not grateful, what do you wear when it's wet? They don't look particularly waterproof to me.

I adore my Merrell trainers, would say to always buy the most expensive you can afford (at reduced prices where possible). Was delighted to find mine in a walking shop at about £40, on offer but only about £10 more than cheapo hi-tech ones.

Have bought cheaper trainers in the past but false economy really as they lose their shape, look tatty, sole gets thin so quick.

Ecco make great trainers too, smarter looking than average, and very comfy & hard wearing (don't be put off if you only see old lady styles, they do a huge variety)

I've been wearing my Keen trainers over the last couple of days (in the rain) and they've kept my feet dry - I think the rubber toe and surround keep the water out. That said, I've been wearing mine for school run/shopping etc - I agree that they are not sturdy or waterproof enough to go trekking across wet fields in. Depends what you want to wear them for.
