What to wear to an awards dinner?

I have just found out that I have been invite to my local councils sports awards dinner as part of my job. It is next wednesday so quite short notice.
I dont have the time or money to buy anything new. I have no idea what sort of thing someone should wear to this type of thing, do I wear a trouser suit or little black dress or what. Help!

What does it say on the official invitations? Black tie? Lounge Suit? Smart business?

That is just the problem, no ticket until next week argh! I like to plan in advance.

Who is organising the event? Phone them and ask them what the dress code is. Black tie is easy. Lounge suit can mean cocktail dresses or something slightly less flash - it depends on the event. Maybe a nice maxi dress or the ever-faithfull LBD. Smart business is what it says on the tin.

I am seeing one of the organisers on wednesday, well she is involved, so will ask her then. I think LBD maybe the way to go, I can dress it up to the correct level then can't I.
