What are those strappy things called, the things that are sewn in to help hang clothes up?

Because I've just bought a lovely dress, and it has a long one sewn across the neck (I have no idea how it helps to hang it up) .

How do I remove it? I think I need one of those stitch-picking things that my Granny had when I was little.

I don't know what they're calle,d but I always cut them off - with very sharp scissors in a very strong light, as close to the seam as you can get.

Check the stitching, too, because some of the more expensive clothes have them sewn in on top of the seam, so they can be unpicked without damage.

It's just a ribbon and you can just cut it out, with scissors, at the seam.

They are only really to help clothes hang in shops.

I always cut them out and add them to my ribbon collection for presents and crafty things.

I do the same as Sooz. They are put in by manufacturers to keep them on the hanger during transport, so are mostly useless or in the way after that

Hmm, unfortunately, they're sewn in on the inside, but they jut out across the neckline IYSWIM.

They're not sewn into the seam, so I think that they could be very carefully unpicked.

I bought a top online from Zara recently that was also like this (I took it back, largely because it was a Granny-top).

Cut 'em off. I think they look naff when you're wearing the garment and can see the hangy thing. Just cut close to the seam.
