Scottish style?

MsInterpret · 31/05/2011 20:16

Style gurus of MN I beseech thee:

I have a fancy dress party/outdoor gathering in a few weeks where I have to dress as someone Scottish. Obviously I want to also look good, glamorous etc. So.... who to be?

DH fancies thinks I should go as <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.heraldscotland.com/polopoly_fs/kirsty-wark-1.931349!image/1836244455.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_620/1836244455.jpg&imgrefurl=www.heraldscotland.com/business/corporate-sme/slide-show-scottish-baftas-special-9th-november-2009-1.931342&usg=__gvELJIscsp2HLc05kIph4rkUdas=&h=956&w=620&sz=332&hl=en&start=20&zoom=1&tbnid=lBTdxMEx1kdfpM:&tbnh=150&tbnw=123&ei=CT3lTZWyLcO28QOG7-j_Bg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dkirsty%2Bwark%2Bimage%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX%26biw%3D1366%26bih%3D643%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=304&page=2&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:14,s:20&tx=33&ty=66&biw=1366&bih=643" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Kirsty Wark but I'm understandably keener to channel a sexier, more dramatic and...well, more recognisable look.

I'm thinking silver dress a la <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.rowthree.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/trainspotting_diane2.jpg&imgrefurl=www.rowthree.com/2008/01/13/finite-focus-kelly-kelly-kelly-trainspotting/&usg=__SZ8ljvWnCjZCf3AXbrTtlaUNRjs=&h=390&w=200&sz=23&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=ec1Jg1MC1hK0XM:&tbnh=173&tbnw=87&ei=Fz7lTeCoCMjKsgaL-Z2KBg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Ddiane%2Btrainspotting%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1366%26bih%3D643%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=132&vpy=46&dur=169&hovh=312&hovw=160&tx=102&ty=148&page=1&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0&biw=1366&bih=643" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Kelly McDonald in trainspotting but not sure I can pull it off or maybe an OTT <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.pixiepalace.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/LadyMacbethCostume1sm.jpg&imgrefurl=www.pixiepalace.com/2010/03/15/new-paper-doll-outfit-lady-macbeth/&h=887&w=425&sz=27&tbnid=sysg6jzqp7wJlM:&tbnh=146&tbnw=70&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dlady%2Bmacbeth%2Bcostume%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=lady+macbeth+costume&usg=__JX-T4TXEU9fXW-tD1NPIAg-xwAA=&sa=X&ei=OT7lTcvjE9C3hAe1pszzBw&ved=0CFcQ9QEwBQ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Lady macbeth in flowing gown with bloody red hands? That is all I've come up with so far.

Is it an impossible task?!

Erm right.....

Jimmy Krankie
Miss jean Brodie
Lorraine Kelly (Tartan Mini and bra over a t-shirt!!)
Karen Gilan (Amy Pond from Dr Who)

I am Scottish and really struggling to think of anyone else!! I like the Kelly McDonald idea though!

gapants · 31/05/2011 20:28

Annie Lennox- cropped red hair, mans suit
Sheena Easton- eighties bouffant hair, mico mini, have a picture of Prinve with you
Lulu- red wig, 60s mini shift dress, go round shouting "weeeeeeeeeeeeeell!"
SuBo- frump!

gapants · 31/05/2011 20:29

Mary Queen of Scots
The Queens mum

MsInterpret · 31/05/2011 20:31

Some great ideas thanks!

I'm liking the Lulu idea at the moment too - should be easy enough to get a wig like that and a dress. Easy but still looking good is my mandate... i.e I would love to go as Annie Lennox but can't pull off the cropped hair!

Miss Jean Brodie would be great but a bit hot I'm thinking with all the tartan and wool that would probably involve.

maybe I can pull of Kelly McDonald with some really really good tights...Hmm

If I just rolled out of bed first thing in the morning and lobbed up at a party I reckon they'd mistake me for ol Billy Grin

mippy · 01/06/2011 16:43

If you're small, Claire Grogan in her Altered Images days.

Jbck · 01/06/2011 17:03

Annie Lennox doesn't only do cropped hair. here

Tilda Swinton is sort of Scottish too - she lives up in the Highlands anyway, so you could go as teh queen from narnia or something?

LaurieFairyCake · 01/06/2011 17:16

Get a poke o chips - hold it in one hand with a fag in the other

Swear a lot - job done

Or get a string vest and go as Rab Grin

LisMcA · 01/06/2011 17:24

If you fake tan your legs and it goes wrong go as a can of Irn Bru!

Gillybobs · 01/06/2011 17:36

Carol "smiley" Smillie? From her changing rooms days?

AuraofDora · 01/06/2011 17:43

drastic dramatic shaved head or even naked - the gail porter look

Like the fake tan idea .. ta-dah it's Irene Bru!

HazeltheMcWitch · 01/06/2011 18:25

Ooh, what about Moira Shearer, ballerina, starred in The Red Shoes ? You could wear lovely things for that, and there's loads of appropriate stuff about at mo. V on trend!

Ashley Jensen - you could go as her in Ugly Betty - a bit fashiony?

Dawn Steele - she's in Wild At heart now, you could go safari ish? NB I don't watch it, she may not actually wear safari style in show!

Kirsty Hume, Stella Tennant (models), and just wear lovely things?

A character from a Jack Vettriano painting ? The Red Dress one??

Ormirian · 01/06/2011 18:31

Yes to Lady Macbeth! Loads of opportunity to be dramatic, devilish and Medieval.

bethelbeth · 01/06/2011 21:57

Get a stripey wig and wear some neons with chunky shoes/heels and you can be Manda Rin of Bis fame!

planetmanda.com/bis/biog.asp

Also you would get token obscure Glaswegian pop culture points!

Or you could go as Michelle McManus for the LOL-factor

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_McManus

K999 · 01/06/2011 22:02

Michelle Mone....just go in your Ultimo bra Grin

MsInterpret · 02/06/2011 15:10

Te hee K999. Yes, that'll be flattering. Wow, thanks for all the ideas, I am pondering, pondering them all...

OP posts:
JennyPiccolo · 02/06/2011 21:45

Isobel Campbell if we're going Glasgow Indie.

eh... Nicola Sturgeon? haha

Lady Macbeth is pretty good, i did it for halloween one year though and nobody got it.

someone from The Scheme? Jacqueline McCafferty?

mippy · 02/06/2011 23:55

Jacqueline McCafferty would be ace, but migth be lost on an English party sadly. You could hand out chuu-x buns.

MsInterpret · 03/06/2011 08:00

Jenny, I like your thinking (apart from Nicola). I would love to go as Isobel Campbell but also still leaning towards Lady Macbeth - what did you do for your costume? So I can see if it is really feasible...!

OP posts:
PickleSarnie · 03/06/2011 08:07

You could go as me. It's very easy - just find some un-ironed jeans, a top with a patch of baby sick on the shoulder and scrape your hair back into a pony tail!
