What does one wear to a charity ball?

It's in June & will be held in a mansion.

I have no idea if I should wear a lbd, a nice evening dress from the back of my wardrobe or a ball gown?

Links would be appreciated.

I'm roughly a size 10 with no norks, short brown hair & approx 5ft 6"..

Wow - size 10 and 5'6", the world is your oyster as you can probably carry off most styles.
I'm desperately trying to find a link which looks like my fave dress for these occasions. It's a slightly stretchy velvet column dress in a gorgeous sea green colour, quite high on the neck but a deep V on the back.

I'd go long and straight-ish, as it's Summer I'd avoid black unless you have to panic buy.

Thanks world I'm not sure about a low back as my back is very freckily.

Are freckles in or out? Smile

Freckily? Does that mean your hair is a reddish brown? I'd definitely go all foxy in green if that is the case.
Freckles are always in.

I'm not reddish although funnily enough I have only recently had my very long curly hair cut V short in a pixie style, it's naturally brown but friends are encouraging me to get it dyed a deep red.

Glad my freckles are acceptable & would love a link to your dress.

Sorry - no link. I spotted it in the window of a local charity store a few years back, phoned them as soon as they opened begging them to take it off display and save it for me and then ran there as fast as I could after work to pay for it.

Oh I love a charity shop bargin!

A long dress would be good because I then wouldn't need to do a fake tan for my milky coloured legs.

I've got this in purple which I've worn to a couple of charity balls and got a lot of complments Smile

and do check out charity shops in (ahem) "nicer" areas - I got a brand new John Lewis evening dress still with tags on for £20 in one last year

Bohica · 24/05/2011 11:20

Tommy the dress is very pretty, so I'm looking for an evening gown more than a ball gown then really arn't I?

I might check Ebay - love a bargin Grin

I think so. The word "ball" usually means what our parents might have called a dinner dance IME - I wouldn't expect an orchestra Grin

Yes charity ball usually means a meal then some auction or awards type thing, then a disco with possibly a band or entertainment.

The last one I went to the men wore black tie and the women wore nice dresses, some short, some long, lots strapless.
