Help me please! Where can I buy a black string vest by tonight?

I realise S&B is an odd place to ask for a string vest but...

I have a fancy dress thing tomorrow night and I'm now committed to going as Madonna, but I need some kind of mesh/string vest type material to make a top. I've tried local fabric shops/market and Hobbycraft but there's nothing. And it's too late to get anything on line.

I'm in Cheshire, by the way. I'm desperate now and can't think where else to try.

I thank you Smile

have you got a fancy dress shop nearby? They are usually quite good for random items for a costume as well as the full thing.

Alternatively, I would buy a loose fit black vest and slash liberally and just wear a black or dayglo bra beneath.

Madonna also famously wore her wedding dress in Like A Virgin. Perhaps you could do the slutty hair and make up a la Madge and either put on your own or a charity shop dress? You'll have to hoik it up at the front for the show your stockings effect Wink

Do you have any 'older man' type shops nearby? They usually sell white cotton string vests but you could dye it black.
Do M&S still sell them?

Shannaratiger · 13/05/2011 07:52

Buy a white one and dye it using dylon dye if all else fails, it's really easy.

Thanks all. Have tried M&S and BHS mens underwear depts. Apparently men don't wear these things any more. Shocking. I could try the smaller independent shops (if there are any left).

Fancy dress shops is a good idea. I know of two in Chester I can try.

Unfortunately I have to stick with the 'Holiday' look. Like the idea of slashing up another vest - this could work.

I send a market. There is always an undies stall selling things that people surely don't still wear!

DudleyDuoflush · 13/05/2011 09:24

I had a look at the fabric stall in the market but not the clothes. I'll have to get back town later and try this and the fancy dress shops.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

If things get really desperate you could do what I used to do when I was a goth in the 80s. Buy a pair of fishnets, either normal ones or the big net ones if you can find them, cut a hole in the crotch and the ends of the toes out and put them on as a top - ie. head through crotch hole and arms through legs. Then put a black bra/bustier/longline bra on over the top.
