Is this a 'black tie' dress?

I've got to go to a black tie event tomorrow and it's been ages since have had to properly dress up. I bought this dress for something different (a birthday night out) but I thought it might work for both... can you let me know if you think it's suitable black tie attire? I'm worried it's too short (comes to just above the knee when standing but bit shorter when sat down)... please be honest... thank you

Honestly, I don't think its suitable. Too short, more party than formal

Personally I would say no.

But it also depends on your age and size tbh. If you are a twenty-something slip of girl then yes. 30s plus, I would say no.

It also depends how formal the black tie event is. I have been to some black tie dos that were very formal - along the lines of royalty attending etc and others which have been far more casual affairs (hockey club ball, for example). If your event is more in line with the latter then wear it.

I would say no as it is too short.

Oh dear that's what I feared! I'm really glad I asked as my DH said yes but I had a feeling I couldn't trust him. In that case I'm going to have to wear something as old as the hills but would rather do that than look tarty. Thanks for the opinions!

Probably not. Might just get away with it if very very petite and you have classy accessories. I would go for something a bit longer, at least knee length. If you don't get to go to many black tie events, maybe get something classic that you could wear again. Not sure what your budget is, but this is lovely

Thanks. Now it's had so many vetos I am definitely not going to wear it! Going to get a trusty black number out the back of the wardrobe. Sprinkles I do like that one a lot, particularly the colour but have never been comfortable in strapless dresses.
