Dress code for the Royal Opera House?

I am taking DD to London soon and have booked tickets for us to the Royal Ballet. I think the last time I went was 10 years ago when she was four for a matinee performance of the Nutcracker. Haven't been in the evening for many years. Do people still dress up? It's a special event for us, as we live in the sticks now and the tickets cost a bleeding fortune so it would be nice to make an effort - but without going over the top. Any thoughts on day dress v maxi dress?

i agree dressing up would be nice, but obviously no ballroom attire! Grin

i reckon if you have dresses, no jeans, you'll be dressed up enough!

You can wear whatever you like. There will be a few people there in jeans (mostly in the cheap seats). There will be people there all dressed up as well (the very dressed up ones - evening dress- will be mostly in the expensive seats!). I have been to the ROH in a leather mini, and again in ripped jeans, and no-one gave a hoot. Nowadays I make more of a deal of it because I'm not longer a student and it's nice to dress up. Personally I usually wear a day dress and a bit of sparkle and a cashmere cardie and some heels- that sort of thing. But no-one will look at you funny whatever you choose to wear.

Have a lovely time.
