Pretty dress for July wedding in Scotland?

OTheHugeManatee · 09/05/2011 10:38

I'm looking for a pretty dress for a wedding in Scotland this July. I'm 32, 5' 8", size 14-ish and moderately pear-shaped, with blonde hair, pale skin and grey-green eyes.

Most of my disposable income has to go on my part-time course of study, so I'm a bit out of the habit of clothes shopping. Where do I look? Please help!

I was thinking that one of those '50s style dresses with a bodice and flared skirt might work for my figure, perhaps with a little linen jacket. Other suggestions also gratefully received. I'm in London, so good access to shops, and my budget is about £100 or possibly a bit more if it's something I'll wear more than very occasionally.

TIA, style gurus of MN!

I am in love with this Trollied Dolly dress:

Ooooh! Thank you for the links! Smile

Of those, the Laura Ashley dress with the big blue flower print is fab and definitely in the running, and that green garden party dress would be perfect - if only I could wear green without looking like a vampire Blush

I'd love to find something with a cut a bit like [[http://cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/2/0/0/c4/7/AAAAApsH6YYAAAAAAMR5cA.jpg?v=1201203469000 this] - anyone got any ideas?

OOOH!

Would this be too OTT, do you think?

I love VofH, possibly OTT for a wedding though

I have just bought this in another print www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10001_10001_103010417118_-1?breadcrumb=Home~txtred+herring+prom

I bough the one with the cherries on it but the picture of it looks terrible - the shape is more accurate in the striped picture

BunnyLebowski · 09/05/2011 14:07

I agree with scotsgirl re: VoH. I'm a huge 50's fan and still find their dresses too 'costumey' and OTT. Also the sateen fabric would do you absolutely no favours.

Have a look at

Stop Staring

Red Dress Shoppe

PinUp Girl

and

ModCloth

I've bought from all (hello pretty dress addiction!) and would highly recommend!

budget option here?

Saltire · 09/05/2011 14:37

Scottish wedding in July? Grin is it Zara's wedding? Wink

OTheHugeManatee · 09/05/2011 15:01

Grin Nooo, not Zara's. It'll be fairly posh though so I'm not afraid of going all hats-and-handbags.

This is gorgeous and a very 'me' colour...I'm frightened about buying a frock over tinternet without trying it on though as some things make me look fab while others just look wrong and it's not always easy to tell with my figure.

BunnyLebowski · 09/05/2011 15:07

That's beautiful. I would be worried about the potential cleavage on show if you have decent sized norks though?

Stop Staring dresses are fantastic quality and on the generous side size wise if that helps.

OTheHugeManatee · 09/05/2011 15:18

I don't have particularly spectacular norks Sad so that's not usually a worry.

I have about 75% of a classic hourglass figure - goodly bum-to-waist ratio, broad shoulders - if only I had the boobs to go with it I'd be set Grin

MN jury: what do you think of this or this?

OP posts:
ellangirl · 09/05/2011 17:32

I like the second one actually, if you're not blessed in the nork dept. Reminded me of this one I'd seen recently long tall sally. There's a few others there that look quite nice. Might be too long, hard to say.

BunnyLebowski · 09/05/2011 17:55

Oh I love that Long Tall Sally dress ellangirl!! So dramatic! Pity I'm more Short Round Betty Grin

OP - Don't like the Joules one - very blah colour and is quite boring. The damsel in a dress one is better but still nothing special imo.

Anything you like here? I love the Doris Smile

dementedma · 09/05/2011 20:46

remember in Scotland in July the weather ranges from glorious to freezing! if you are in the West or North, the midges will eat you alive so take a light wrap to throw over shoulders!
And wellies.
and an umbrella.
A cagoule would be good.
And hot, beefy Bovril Grin

tethersend · 09/05/2011 22:39

I liked the VoH floral one with the jacket actually... Why not go to the shop and try it on?

Otherwise, I say get vintage. Go to Spitalfields market and surrounding vintage shops, then up Brick lane. Then go into town and go to Kingly court off carnaby street and maybe try the posh vintage shops round covent garden/leicester square...
