Top Layer?

I have a selection of long (maxi) skirts, fitted tops and sandals for summer, but what do i wear on top if it's chilly / raining ? I just never know what jackets etc you can acceptably wear with a skirt!

not sure about maxi skirts but over the top of my maxi dresses I wear:

cardis - cropped, regular length, belted or button-up
navy, grey or beige shrunken blazer (needs to be very fitted, imo)

I see lots of people wearing denim jackets. I like that look but it doesn't suit me.

Not sure denim jackets would suit me either, feel a bit too old (43) for them! Will check out some fitted blazer styles though, thank you. I was sort of leaning towards them but as i am seriously challenged in the fashion department i needed some encouragement lol. Thanks very much :)
