dyed my hair like a mahogany only a cheapish £3 something it faded to like a crappy auburn really quickly and everytime loads of orangey water comes out.

Only had it on like 2 1/2 weeks and already im considereing dying over it with a LIVE red that I've had for ages and not used.

is this a good or bad Idea??

Hello not to sure on the colours etc but I ran out of my usual red/brown dye that I use and put a purple/brown live xxl one on it. Have since decided I want to go back to my original colour and have found out that xxl is quite hard to get rid of due to the amount of sillicone in the dye. So when you straighten it, it then bonds the silicone to your hair or somehhing. I'm no expert but that's what I've found out today :)

My hairdresser told me about revlon colour balls. I got them from amazon they're about £15.
They are a type of conditioner with a pigment in them, theres loads of different shades. So it keeps your colour for longer between washes. They don't have any amonia in either so they are gentle on your hair.
Just a thought for between colours if you find the red colour fades quickly. I know mine does. Apparantly red is the worst colour for fading, which I didn't know before I changed to it.

I would try to get as much of the colour out before dying again. Good news: if the colour is showing in the water it should come out easily. Get a product called "colour B4" from Boots or superdrug. Live XXL is quite harsh on your hair. Toddle is correct: silicone + heat = cooked silicone = wrecked hair. Avoid silicone based shampoos, conditioners and styling products if you have dyed hair and use heat stylers.

Sprinkles, do you know if colour B4 would remove highlights? I used bright red vegetable based dye on blonde highlights, but the red has now faded to a copper colour and I'd like to go back to the blonde. I thought about using something like that but didn't know if it would take the highlights away too...Confused

Ooh interesting stuff with the silicone

I do get the impression its quite strong I've got red passion colour XXL LIVE

the only one that works on dark brown hair.

fairylights, I'm not sure about vegetable dyes. join Scott Cornwall Hair Expert's page on Facebook, or google his website. He makes colour B4 and will answer questions on facebook. It definitely will not affect the bleach part of the highlight as all it does is remove pigment, but would def check about veg dye as might react badly.

FairyLightsForever · 03/05/2011 16:41

Thank you, I'll go and have a look.

FairyLightsForever · 03/05/2011 16:58

Hmm, looks as though it doesn't work with the vegetable dyes Sad may have to just find a new colour to dye over the top. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I've used xxl live a couple of times and it really dried my hair out, it also faded very quickly - although i did use the bright red and purples which i believe are prone to fading quickly.

That colour b4 is excellent at removing dye, just have a hair dye ready for afterwards as you will be left ginger.

I've had good results with the john freida foam, didn't seem to fade quickly although i use mid browns, covers grey and isn't messy. It was 3 for 2 in boots last week.

sprinkles77 · 03/05/2011 21:07

Miche8, colour B4 does leave you ginger-ish as it removed the pigment nut cannot undo the effect of the peroxide in permanent dye (which is to strip your natural colour to allow synthetic dye to work). DO NOT use a permanent or semi-permanent colour straight after colour B4. The peroxide in it will undo all the work of the colour B4 and you'll be back to square 1! Have a temp / level 1 / 8 wash dye ready, and may be a hat. No semi- or perm colour for at least a week.

I'm a bit worried about the fading quickly aspect now

How bizarre-am in exactly the same position with XXL Live red passion waiting in my bathroom for me, dyed my hair 2 weeks ago with a red nice and easy and it looked nice but faded quickly, but just a bit worried that it might be a bit too soon to dye again..

HaughtyChuckle · 12/05/2011 17:04

how quickly did it fade? my hairdresser is applying so I dont bodge lol, good luck
