am going down to london for a daytime gallery private view on wednesday. it's going to be very busy at the gallery and dh is giving a speech. am traveling down on the train in the morning, with the dc's in tow for it. need to wear something that will still look ok when i get there!

smart casual i suppose, don't need to go over smart although i will get to meet sir julian fellowes! no idea what kind of thing to go for.

What do you look like? What's your budget?

TethersEnd · 02/05/2011 20:26

What's your budget?

I would suggest something like this or this from VWA...

lucykate · 02/05/2011 20:48

budget is small, can't afford vwa i'm afraid!

am short, hair in a bob, size 12. normal uniform is tunic/skinny jeans combo.

No prob, just give us an idea of how much you want to spend Smile

Was thinking something draped and jersey that won't crease...

lucykate · 02/05/2011 21:11

can probably stretch to about £50, although i have just remembered we've not paid this months council tax yet! Wink

This could work...

Or this

I am also short and a size 12 and I tried a lovely silk dress on in the sale in Kookai today - it was about 50 pounds. I didn't buy it because it came up huge and even the size 10 was too big but I think it would have been good. Or Mint Velvet had a couple of nice silk dresses in their sale.

I ended up buying a dress from The White Company which Tethers slated previously but I decided to ignore her after her recent sandals thread. :) Grin

I can't see it online - it's a bit like this but has a sort of obi-type waist and is in a grey marl. V flattering but I'll need smoothing underwear as I needed to size down to fit my waist .

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 02/05/2011 22:07

Yummy if you're not too norky which sadly I am.

vanillamum · 02/05/2011 22:08

Is it this Weds you are talking about because will you need to hit the shops tomorrow online might not come in time? If so do you have a decent selection of shops near you? Only asking because it limits choice.

vanillamum · 02/05/2011 22:14

I quite like this -especially if you are petite and dark haired with a tidy bob, I suspect I might look like fagash lil in it though...www.jaeger.co.uk/index.cfm?page=1013&productid=480000W&productvarid=480000W-03300-12&refpage=1933&pagesize=12&productpage=1&viewall=false

Over budget

I have just noticed I am suggesting very bright colours, it must be the sunshine..let me know if too loud

vanillamum · 02/05/2011 22:41

I've got it, this is the one, won't crease and if the kids spill anything on the train just wipe it down with a wetwipe...

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 03/05/2011 18:00

OP - I positively FORBID you to wear a leather sheath dress on a train in this weather. :)

vanillamum · 03/05/2011 21:02

Well if it got really hot you could use a hole punch and "embellish" it. Something to amuse the kids on a long train journey and a way to make an unique fashion statement...wheres the loser?

can just imagine dh's face if i turned up clad in leather Wink

well, thanks for all the suggestions. unfortunately i didn't get chance to go shopping on tuesday as planned so had to settle for something i already had. went for a brown dress (sleeveless, length just below the knee), thin brown tights, wedge shoes and a floaty cardigan. it was quite hot traveling but chilly on the underground.

this is where i've been, dh is the society president.
