I desp need to dye my hair as ive got a abit of grey hair coming thru

Ive NEVER have dyed my hair before in my life as i love my natural colour. Im a in between of copper red and auburn hair colour.

To go to the hairdressers, its too expensive.

i do have thick hair so do i need 2 boxes or jus the 1??

im a hair colour virgin with stoopid questions??!??!?!?!

Hiya, i think the new foam hair dye out would be great for first timers as you can actually see where its going and where you have missed! id try with just 1 bottle for now though, you can always dye again if its too light or patchy but i tend to find if i use 2 bottles the colour comes out a lot darker and not what id expect, its harder to take off than it is to put on, cant even think what the hair dye is called but google it in boots or something and you will find it x

yes i was thinking about the foam one as it was advertised yesterday on telly...hmmm will have a look to see what it called

I have long thick hair and only ever use one box.

Dying red can be a bit hit and miss in my experience - mine always comes out darker than the pictures on the box.

I'd recommend you use semi-permanent for now until you find a shade you're happy with.

I have been dying my har at home for donkeys. If you have an all over colour, it doesn't make sense to pay over the odds at a salon (for highlights etc, yes, salons are better!).

Use a semi-permanent (the ones that wash out in 20/25 washes) until you find a colour you love. The foam is no less messy/faffy than the liquid, to be honest.

Loreal range is the best I've found. Even when my thick hair was long, one box was enough.

Get a friend to help you or it is so easy to miss bits, especially when you have thick hair. Its not the actual quality of the dye that makes a professional colour better, its the application.

One box should be enough unless your hair is very long (past your shoulder blades). Use a semi, use a shade one lighter than your natural colour. This will give a more natural look than going too dark, and if you have some grey will make re-growth less noticeable. follow the instructions to the letter. Remove all clothing you don't want stained, use old towel to dry off. L'oreal is a good brand. Red colours fade very fast, and may look very bright if you have lots of grey hairs.

I use a foam one.

I have dark brown hair & love my hair colour so tend to go for something that won´t alter my hair colour but just cover the greys.

thanks everyone for advices esp sprinkles as i didnt know i need to go a shade lighter than my natural hair but now its all a blur looking on the boots and superdrug website...im unsure what colour is the shade lighter than mine!! .

on L'Oreal.....whats is "casting creme"??

casting creme is a nice semi - permenant colour (upto 24 washes). If you're feeling really nervous, use a clairol nice and easy temporary colour. Nothing to mix, lasts max 8 washes. In terms of picking a colour, just look at the boxes for a guide. when you get the clairol temp colour, inside is a leaflet. If you like the colour you've used, the leaflet will help you pick the right semi- perm or perm colour. Clairol nice n' easy is a good brand that I use, not that funky, but reliable.

Oh, and if you cock up with a temp colour, you can get it out by washing lots with head and shoulders. if you cock up with a semi- perm or perm you can get something called "colour B4" from boots and superdrug which will take the colour out. I've used all the stuff I've mentioned, with success. good luck.

biglips hope you don't mind but I've just had a peek at your profile pics to get an idea of your hair colour. Home colours generally come out darker than you think they will. I would buy no darker than a no.6 shade IIWY (depending on the make the colour codes are all slightly different, so it may say 6.something or 6/something, etc, but definitely don't go any darker (5, 4, 3 is darker, 7, 8 etc is lighter).

I wouldnt be nervous, its exciting!! I really love Garnier Nuitrisse, Ive just bought chestnut today as its Summer. I usually go for Mocha. I always do it before I get my hair cut as sometimes when you retouch it the ends can be a slightly different colour. You wont have that problem the first time though. Also, it stops the hairdresser from trying to flog you a colour. Good luck!! when are you doing it?

Just realised I didn't read your post properly and you mention being auburn - does that mean the colour I was looking at isn't your usual colour? It looked brown.
