was this comment about what i was wearing rude?

I am probably being way over-sensitive, (have my period, tired from working extra days and extra hours for last 3 weeks) but this has really annoyed me today.

Wore this dress today for work with black opaques, plain low heels and this belt and a pashmina looped round my neck. As I took my jacket off my boss (male mid 40s) pipes up

"Gosh you are brave wearing that on a chilly day like today"

What exactly was wrong with what I had on, found it a really weird comment, it was hardly a flimsy summer dress, the skirt is probably a bit shorter than I normally wear to work but not indecent and had opaques on and the dress code is quite relaxed. Was it his way of saying he thought it wasn't appropriate?

Goodnesss, no, he was saying it didn't look terribly warm. Not that is wasn't appropriate.

Lovely outfit, btw - LOVE the dress. Smile

eggyminniewhingesagain · 28/04/2011 19:53

I think it was just a very crap attempt at small talk. Looks lovely to me!

MrsCampbellBlack · 28/04/2011 19:54

I'd have thought he meant if its chilly you may get ahem a little issue with your nipples - but that could just be my twisted mind and left-over paranoia from a mother who used to sellotape hers flat so as to avoid that issue!

CommonerTrulyReigns · 28/04/2011 19:54

I think you would have looked lovely.

Smile

May he have been making a comment about nipplage in the cold weather?

mandoo · 28/04/2011 19:55

Love the dress and belt. Perfect. No need for concern or comment!

RedwingWinter · 28/04/2011 19:55

I think that's a great dress for work.

I would translate his comment as 'that's a very pretty summery dress and gosh isn't it cold today' or something like that. I don't think he meant to be rude, just that he thought you might be cold (though I'm not sure why he was worried about that!).

whoneedssleepanyway · 28/04/2011 19:56

Thank you

Nipples definitely wouldn't have been a problem as had padded bra on underneath...! Glad to know my boss is concerned about my nipples...Shock

Really? Nipples?

Jeezo. He was making inane small talk surely!

cruelladepoppins · 28/04/2011 19:58

I would prob feel cold around the neck and chest area in that dress at this time of year. And bare forearms, brrr. But then my office is generally cold even in summer. Is your office warm?

MissBeehivingCorgis · 28/04/2011 19:59

I wore a silk dress with NO TIGHTS this week. Your boss would have probably had a coronary. I am acknowledged as a snappy dresser at work however Grin

It's a bit of a weird comment to make though as you were wearing tights and a scarf [cconfused]

MissBeehivingCorgis · 28/04/2011 20:01

I don't show my nipples btw as office is tropical. Wink

notyummy · 28/04/2011 20:01

I would take it as an attempt at small talk - nothing more.

MrsTittleMouse · 28/04/2011 20:02

It was small talk. Not great small talk, but small talk all the same.

I used to have a dress just like that from Warehouse when I was a student. :)

MissBeehivingCorgis · 28/04/2011 20:03

Actually I don't remember noticing anyone's nipples at work, except for one time when a colleague showed me his nipple ring.

That was visible through his shirt - a nice vest was required.

fluffles · 28/04/2011 20:05

it's a very summery dress.. men don't notice things like opaque tights.. how cold was it where you are? it's warm and sunny here and would look nice but i would maybe say 'you look summery' to somebody wearing a summer dress on a cold and wet day.

whoneedssleepanyway · 28/04/2011 20:05

come to think of it he is a bit cr@p at small talk...

MissBehiving - he probably would have had a coronary Grin - what is it about offices, mine seems to vary in different parts of the building, it is tropical where I sit but then I walk into another part of the building and need thermals and hat, scarf and gloves!

whoneedssleepanyway · 28/04/2011 20:06

i think it looks more summery in the picture, it is quite heavy silky viscose, i actually think it would be quite hot to wear on a really warm day!

MrsCampbellBlack · 28/04/2011 20:15

I'm sure it was nothing to do with nipples - its just the chilly comment - well when I was younger Smile all the boys loved this weather because of the abundance of girls in thin dresses on chilly mornings.

But yes - am sure your boss didn't mean this - well I hope not.

KurriKurri · 28/04/2011 20:31

I think he liked your dress, wanted to say something complimentary, and then a load of old nonsense came out of his mouth.
