About clothes sizing.

I have today bought a dress from Phase Eight in a size 10. Trust me, when I say I am no size 10. I have a jumper from Phase Eight which is an 18. I bought it when I was a size 16 because the 16 was too small. Go figure, as they say.

I have two blouses from Coast which are a bit too small for me and they are both 16s. I have just bought a blouse today, also from Coast. It is a 12 and it fits perfectly. Confused

Today I am wearing a White Stuff dress today in a 12 and it fits like a glove. I have just tried to buy another White Stuff dress today in a 12 - fits on body but way too small on chest. Tried on the 14 - too big on body, but still too small on chest. Angry

Have a White Stuff skirt and M&S skirt in 12s which are both a bit big, but I can barely fit into M&S size 12 jeans. AAAARRGGGHHH!!!!

What size AM I? Confused

I have stuff in my wardrobe from a ten to a 24.

Totally ridiculous.

foundwanting · 27/04/2011 17:38

Sounds like you are about the same size as me. Grin

I have size 10s and 18s in my wardrobe, and everything in between.

I am also both a 'small' and an 'extra large'.

IngridBergman · 27/04/2011 17:39

I would first of all ditch White stuff as a valid comparison. Their sources are so diverse I think that sizing is totally random and things have very non standard fit, you can tell from the reviews. (at least they're honest).

Other than that, not much help I'm afraid as I vary a fair bit too. Swimming costumes have to be a 14/16 because of body length, everything else luckily a 10 or a 12 when I'm at my normal weight, and 8 or 10 at the moment. (weird)

Poodlehorse · 27/04/2011 20:29

moan away FN, can't be of any help but I know what you mean. Don't think I have anything quite that diverse, I am a 12-14 normally but soem 14s are a bit hmmmm and I won't on principle buy the 16 although I don't think I have got into anything that said it was a 10 in a decade unless it had American sizing but realistically I don't care what size I am if I just new they were all the sodding same. As for White Stuff, well anything I fancy in there as soon as I try on I look like a CBeebies presenter so I have totally given up, nice on the hanger but not on me.

Shhhh · 27/04/2011 20:38

you sound like you are me !!!!!!!!!!!
I have the same issues... I have no idea how places decide on sizing. I think they just guess each time they cut a design out Hmm

Meggles76 · 27/04/2011 20:41

I always say that I am an 8-10 but agree that it really depends on where the clothes are from.
In Boden tops, the 8 is usually fine but in their knitwear I usually need a 10.
In M&S, I am always an 8 in knitwear. My bottom half is larger than my top half Sad but recently had to get size 8 bf jeans from there
In Topshop, I always need a 10 and sometimes even need a 12 in some of their stuff
Monsoon I also find crazy sizing. Tried a vest top on the other week and even the 8 felt too big. Tried a T-shirt on in a 'small' (8-10) and it was tight.
Next are always on the generous size - although I buy jeans from their petite range and find the sizing all over the place

Optimism · 27/04/2011 20:52

Totally agree. I'm usually a size 8 but once bought two pairs of trousers on the same day in the same shop - one was a size 10 (could not even get into the 8) the other was a size 6 (ridiculous - I'm scrawny but have never been a 6 but the 8 was just far too big on me). Completely crazy - 2 sizes difference between them but they both fitted me. Surely there should be some sort of standard sizing - at least within the one shop??

FellatioNels0n · 27/04/2011 20:53

Grin I know what you mean about the CBeebie presenter - I always feel like that about Boden, but White stuff I have a better success rate with, albeit a love/hate thing.

Length of trousers always gets me. Bought a pair of blue trousers in regular, fit beautifully, go back to buy the exact same style in black, didn't bother trying them on (why would I, surely they are identical bar the colour) but get them home and they are about 2cm longer than the navy ones...how annoying!

Ephiny · 28/04/2011 10:26

That drives me crazy Holly, when you try one thing on, buy another in the same style and size but different colour, and it's actually a completely different size! I always try everything on now, which is annoying but has to be done.

I'm on average about a 10, but have stuff in my wardrobe from a 6 to a 14 and it all fits me. In fact I have a Next size 6 skirt that fits fine, and a pair of their linen trousers in an 8, but have to get their jeans in a 12, which makes no sense at all. I wonder if they just make it up as well...

FellatioNels0n · 28/04/2011 14:02

And, annoyingly, I am too tall for petite but too short for standard length stuff. Confused

I have two pairs of Zara trousers in a 12. One I need a belt to keep them up, the other won't even go past my thighs.
